This Mustang Mk IVA (P-51K-10-NT, U.S. serial 44-12355) was the personal aircraft of Wing Commander (Flying) James Storrar. As was customary in the RAF for Wing Commanders, it displays the pilot's initials, or in this case JAS -- short for James -- in dark blue with light blue edging in place of the squadron codes, and has the Wing Commander's pennant on both sides. Entries in Storrar's log book confirm that his ground crew kept this aircraft highly polished.
The aircraft was fitted with an Aero Products prop, Dallas hood and exhaust shrouds. Among other sorties Storrar flew this particular aircraft on a mission with RCAF's 442 Squadron, on May 9th 1945, to provide top cover during the liberation of the Channel Islands. Although the Germans had offered to surrender, there were rumours that the German Commandant was not going to give up without a fight. RCAF Mustangs of 442 'Caribou' Squadron were sent to defend the naval forces. In fact the Germans surrendered peacefully. Although 14 RCAF Mustangs left RAF station Hunsdon, Hertfordshire, 3 aircraft had to return with mechanical problems. This mission was led by Wing Commander James (JAS) Storrar flying KM232.
