Experience a carefully refined rendition of Barcelona–El Prat Airport (LEBL) designed for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. This freeware add-on, developed by Ray Smith, provides two distinct scenery files that enhance ground operations, expand gate functionality, and reconfigure support vehicle lanes for an improved traffic flow. Positioned near the Mediterranean coast, Barcelona–El Prat Airport ranks among Spain’s busiest hubs, making it a critical point for regional and intercontinental flights. With these files, you can expect more realistic parking, improved jetway placement, and an option to incorporate crosswind functionality on runway 02/20.
Precise Integration of Airport Elements
Ray Smith’s design introduces resized gates and integrated jetbridges at various terminals, ensuring that a wider range of aircraft types can dock effortlessly. The addition of multiple parking spots, including those assigned for specific airlines, also helps reproduce actual airline operations. Moreover, support vehicles no longer wander unnecessarily onto taxiways thanks to a completely restructured service road network. This optimized layout reduces congestion, prevents ground traffic bottlenecks, and allows more streamlined gate-to-taxiway transitions.
Optional Crosswind Runway Activation
Two separate BGL files are included to customize how runway 02/20 behaves. The first variant (FSX_lebl_cw.BGL) activates the crosswind runway, providing additional operational flexibility under certain wind conditions. The other version (FSX_lebl.BGL) keeps runway 02/20 inactive for takeoffs or landings. Both files share the same gate configurations, but you can switch between them at any time based on personal preference or traffic flow requirements.
Installation Steps
- Select the BGL file that suits your desired configuration.
- Copy it into the “Addon Scenery/scenery” folder within your main Flight Simulator X directory.
- Restart the simulator to activate the updated airport layout.
Removal Instructions
- To revert to the default airport, simply delete or remove the corresponding BGL file.
Additional Notes
While Jim Vile and Reggie Fields provided insight into crosswind runway activation, you may occasionally notice references to “fake” runways if you monitor ATIS with the crosswind-active file. These extra runway entries are essential for enabling crosswind usage. If you prefer a simpler approach, switch to the non-crosswind file. Fully tested with various AI traffic packages, the modification performs seamlessly but does not require any specific traffic add-on.
For a more immersive tower experience, configure a dedicated key or controller button for “View track/pan Toggle” to freely survey the airport environment. Assigning this control in the options menu will allow you to pan around the airport from the control tower’s viewpoint, then snap back to your aircraft’s position with a single input.
Legacy Acknowledgment
Creator Ray Smith offers thanks to the contributions of Lee Swordy, whose pioneering work with AFCAD remains influential. Although further refinements may be limited until equivalent editing tools become available, these enhancements offer a significant upgrade to the default Barcelona–El Prat scenery. Enjoy streamlined operations, realistic spacing for larger aircraft, and improved vehicular route planning that helps keep both runway approaches and taxiways clear.
Fly safely and have a pleasant time exploring modern Barcelona’s principal air gateway with these comprehensive updates.
