This AFCAD upgrade for EHAL highlights the charming General Aviation (GA) facilities at Ameland Airport in the Netherlands. Created by Joost de Wit, it refines the default Microsoft Flight Simulator X landscape and brings an updated airport configuration to match reality as closely as possible using default simulator objects. Though tested exclusively in the original release of FSX, it may also work when SP1 or SP2 updates are installed.

Refined Airfield Setup

Ameland Airport (EHAL) on the island of Ameland presents a terrain layout primarily used by small aircraft in real life. Because the original default layout in FSX was somewhat off-center compared to the real-world charts, this new AFCAD—built with Airport Design Editor (ADE)—aligns runway markings, parking spaces, and taxiways with greater accuracy. The facility retains default buildings for simplicity but recreates the aprons in a way that more closely simulates true conditions.

Installation Procedure

  1. Copy both .bgl files into your FSX/Addon Scenery/Scenery folder.
  2. Confirm the Addon Scenery directory is activated in your FSX scenery library.

Removing the Files

  1. Simply delete or move the new .bgl files out of your FSX/Addon Scenery/Scenery folder.

Radio Versus Tower Frequency

Although the real-world field operates with a “Radio” frequency rather than a pronounced tower facility, Joost de Wit has introduced an ATC-style Tower frequency in these files. Since Microsoft Flight Simulator X “Traffic” channels can be too passive for meaningful dialogue, implementing a Tower frequency allows sim-pilots to at least experience audible interactions with a controller as they announce departures or arrivals.

Enhanced GA Experience

This freeware scenery adjustment optimizes the environment for General Aviation pilots seeking short hops between the mainland and the Frisian islands. The mod supports VFR flying and simulates correct runway dimensions, taxi routes, and safe parking for small aircraft. The developer’s main goal is to deliver an environment that parallels the authentic airport procedures without introducing custom 3D models beyond the simulator’s existing library.

Enjoy realistic practice circuits at EHAL and have smooth takeoffs or landings with this carefully crafted modification by Joost de Wit.
