When Air Canada was privatized in 1988, its managers set out to acquire the newest, most efficient fleet in the business. As a first step in that direction, the airline ordered 34 Airbus A320 narrow body jets to replace its 727's; the first entered service in February 1990. Air Canada passengers praised the A320's comfortable cabin, and airline executives were pleased with its performance. So pleased, in fact, that Air Canada became the first North American operator to order the 264-passenger Airbus A340-300 for long haul flights to Tokyo from Toronto and Montreal; to Osaka from Toronto; to Delhi from London; and to Hong Kong, London, Osaka, and Toronto from Vancouver, BC.
In 1996, the company started to replace the DC-9 fleet when it took delivery of its first 112-passenger Airbus A319. That type entered service with Air Canada in December 1996, and the last of its 35 A319s arrived in June 1988. That same year, Air Canada announced that its 21st century fleet would be centered on Airbus products. The A330-300 entreed service with the airline in October 1999.
Future Airbus orders are pending due to Air Canada's restructuring plans. The A340-500 and -600 aircraft were scheduled to enter service with Air Canada in 2002.
"The A320 was launched on March 2, 1984. It is the first subsonic commercial aircraft with fly-by-wire controls. First flight took place on February 22, 1987. The A320-100 was the initial version and was superseded by the A320-200 from the third quarter of 1988. The A320-200 differs from the A320-100 in having wingtip fences, a wing center-section fuel tank, and a higher MTOW". - Description by Pedro Oliveria.
