Expert Overview

This comprehensive scenery package enriches both X-Plane 11 and X-Plane 12 with true-to-life satellite imagery covering almost all of Australia. Built with Ortho4XP and carefully compiled DDS files, it features zoom level 14 textures across the continent, while the Sydney region boasts impressive ZL17 resolution for an extra level of detail. Created by Forkboy2 and bundled by Fly Away Simulation, this enhancement showcases terrain nuances you won’t see in default scenery, adding immersive depth to every VFR and IFR flight over Australia.

From my decades of experience in PC flight simulation, I’ve found this mod strikingly accurate and well-optimized, delivering crisp visuals without overwhelming system resources. It’s especially rewarding when coupled with a high-quality mesh add-on, offering even more refined topographical results. The approach and departure phases over iconic Australian landscapes feel far more authentic, making this an essential upgrade for simmers looking to explore the continent in a truly photoreal environment.

A complete photoreal scenery package for users of X-Plane 12 and X-Plane 11 covering the majority of Australia.  The scenery is extremely detailed with some areas at higher definition than overs - however, it does cover (most) of Australia.

Demonstration of the photoreal scenery around Sydney.This package brings Australia to life in X-Plane 11 by adding high-quality photoreal ground textures which are true to life and captured from actual satellite imagery.

The areas covered in the package:

  • Sydney area in HD
  • Northern
  • New South Wales (NSW)
  • Queensland
  • South
  • Western

The photoreal files have a zoom level of 14 (Sentinel-2) for the entire continent, except greater Sydney area is ZL17 (higher quality).

All of the scenery data was created using Ortho4XP.

Installation is easy and detailed installation instructions have been included in the archive for ease of use.

These photorealistic files have already been pre-built (or pre-compiled) into DDS format ready for X-Plane. While they make the package larger and download times longer, we find users prefer this over having to convert the files themselves manually. The archive has been zipped using higher compression which slightly overcomes the larger uncompressed DDS format.

This package works best with a high-quality mesh scenery add-on to really bring the scenery to life. We recommend the HD Mesh v4 from AlpilotX which can be downloaded here.

How to install this mod

X-Plane scenery

  1. Extract the downloaded archive

    Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.

  2. Copy into Custom Scenery

    Place the scenery folder into X-Plane 12/Custom Scenery/.

  3. Set scenery load order

    X-Plane loads sceneries top-to-bottom from Custom Scenery/scenery_packs.ini. Custom airports should be ABOVE mesh and ortho-imagery.

  4. Restart X-Plane

    Close X-Plane completely and relaunch. The new content loads automatically.

  5. Always read the included readme

    Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.

Before I make any comment, I wish to thank the authors of these freewares for their effort and contribution to the flight sim community.

I like flying helicopters in flight sim, which means I like flying slow and low and looking at scenery up close. In my opinion, XP-11 has provided a better low-flying experience than FSX because the XP-11 auto gen scenery is more dynamic and realistic, the display arrangement (setting up 3 screens) is more flexible, and the flight dynamic of aircraft (especially helicopters) more realistic.

However, the upcoming FS2020 is set to blow all competitors out of the water with its realistic scenery.

Having missed out on being an alpha tester, I was hoping that this download will make my XP-11 experience match FS2020 with photo-real scenery.

Alas, it was not to be!

It took a whole day to download the 60+G data of Australia photo-real scenery (because I live in Australia). XP-11 has previously released an enhancement for several major cities, including New York, Las Vegas, and Sydney. The airport and surrounding scenery in these upgrades are very good. I found that the photoreal scenery which I download did not add any enhancement to the XP-11 pack. Like scenery in Aerosoft, the scenery is pancaked. Even though it looks OK from 10,000 feet, it actually overwrites some of the XP-11's auto gen, which makes the low-slow flying pretty dismal. After trying many different configuration and tweaking the ini file, I decided the original XP-11 enhancement is in fact better. I ended up deleting the Australian scenery.

I feel bad about leaving unfavorable comment for a freeware. If I had gotten the wrong result because I had loaded it wrong, I hope someone can enlighten me.

Still I would like to thank the authors for putting it up.

    @Ying Yee: Very late answer, but in case anyone else wonders. Yes, this is correct and is because of the zoom level used.

    Zoom level 14 won't be greatly detailed but is sufficient for most cases. If you want more detail in the ortho, then you need to find or create photos with a higher zoom level. Be aware that the more detailed an ortho gets, the larger the files will be.

    Hi. I downloaded the scenery yesterday and installed it. No doubt it is great for IFR flights and fulfills my needs.

    But there is one problem I can't solve: no matter what I do, the buildings and trees don't appear. I installed it as instructed and edited my .ini file.

    Hi There Great file. I however live in a regional area of Australia where the internet is pretty inconsistent and was wondering if there was a torrent ink available. this would solve my problem!

    I've downloaded the file. and while it looks promising it seems a bit grainy to me. I'm using XP 12 plus I have also installed alpilotX. I'm flying at 5000ft with a Cessna. Clearly, when I'm flying much higher it is great but when getting down to 5000 it is still good but much grainier. this is how it is supposed to work? Thoughts?

    The layers required for these installs are like a 12-step program. Good on you for offering! but it just is such a time suck it's a bit crazy.

    Hi. The scenery is great although there are parts of western Australia around Karratha and port Hedland there missing. This is from two different sources, not a conversion error. Is there any way of seeing what files are supposed to be included so I can see which files are missing so I can separately source through ortho4xplane? Unfortunately, when you reach an area without scenery the game crashes. Thx.

    Can someone explain this to me? From other things I've read, if the Ortho is above the HD mesh v4 in the ini file, the HD mesh v4 will not be used at all? I'm new to this, so I might be missing something important?

    Is there some way of contacting the developer for support? The sample layouts are brilliant but I am having difficulty installing them correctly. I have followed the directions in the readme.txt file but it is not loading. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.
