This repaint package offers a specialized livery for Rob Richardson’s freeware Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Created by Peter Watkins, it represents the rare PI-C434, a variant that once found its way into clandestine missions in Southeast Asia. Although originally destined for Philippine Air Lines, this particular airframe gained notoriety when sold in September 1965 to Continental Air Services Inc—an entity often cited as a covert operator—and thereafter performed discreet “rice dropping” and “refugee evacuation” flights. By 1973, all three Twin Pioneer aircraft in that service tragically met with accidents, ending their unusual operational history.

Noteworthy Elements of PI-C434

The Twin Pioneer, introduced in the mid-1950s, is recognized for its STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) capabilities. Scottish Aviation equipped it with rugged radial engines that enabled operations from unprepared airfields. This PI-C434 version, carrying construction number 567, exemplifies those characteristics. While Philippine Air Lines initially ordered multiple airframes—including Series 2 variants with Pratt & Whitney R-1340 radials—some did not see active service with that airline. As a result, they were often transferred elsewhere and, in this case, took on more secretive roles. Historically, the Twin Pioneer’s triple-fin tail design and spacious cabin allowed flexible deployment for both cargo and passenger transport, especially in remote regions with limited infrastructure.

Livery Application in Your Simulator

This repaint is designed exclusively for Rob Richardson’s freeware model of the Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer. Make sure you have the base aircraft from the Fly Away Simulation mod library. Once that foundational content is installed, follow these steps to add the PI-C434 texture:

  • Locate the Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer folder in your SimObjects/Airplanes directory.
  • Copy the texture.PI-C434 folder provided by this repaint into the aircraft folder.
  • Open the aircraft.cfg file and insert the following block of text, being sure to replace xx with the next available entry number:
[fltsim.xx]
title=Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer PI-C434
sim=Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=PI-C434

ui_type=Twin Pioneer
ui_variation=PI-C434
description=Powered by two Alvis Leonides 531 radial engines, the Twin Pioneer was a high-wing cabin monoplane with a triple fin and rudder assembly and fixed tailwheel undercarriage. The prototype Twin Pioneer, registered G-ANTP, first flew at Prestwick Airport on 25 June 1955. Flight trials proved that the aircraft had a very short landing run and the aircraft was displayed at the September 1955 Society of British Aircraft Constructors Show at Farnborough.
Three pre-production aircraft were built for trials, and sales and demonstrations.
In 1958, the 33rd aircraft was used as a prototype for the Series 2 with Pratt & Whitney Wasp R-1340 radial engines which had been ordered by Philippine Air Lines. A Series 3 aircraft was also developed to use the improved Alvis Leonides 531 radial engine.

Make sure the title lines up with your existing entries in the aircraft.cfg so it appears correctly within Microsoft Flight Simulator X. When done, launch the simulator to confirm the PI-C434 texture loads as intended.

Credit to the Creators

This repaint was put together by Peter Watkins, while the freeware Twin Pioneer model itself is the work of Rob Richardson. Both creators continue to enhance the flight simulation world by preserving classic aircraft and their individual stories. Downloading their respective packages will give you the complete experience of flying this historic short-field transport in your virtual sky.
