This freeware repaint package offers an accurate depiction of the Lockheed L1011-500 bearing the Caledonia Airways livery from the early 1990s. Created for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, it showcases a distinctive tri-jet design that marked the L1011 series as a technologically advanced wide-body for its era. The included textures, crafted by Wes Archibald, require installation of the base model (SL10115.ZIP) authored by Mike Stone.

Distinctive Tri-Jet Engineering

The Lockheed L1011-500, often referred to as the TriStar, features three high-bypass turbofan engines arranged with an intake on top of the rear fuselage (sometimes described as the “S-duct” layout), contributing to its signature aerodynamic profile. This design provided a balanced performance envelope and helped define a generation of wide-body jetliners.

Why the L1011-500 Variant Matters

The 500 series of the L1011 includes extended range and modifications in wing design, making it more versatile for transcontinental and intercontinental flights. Simmers typically enjoy the stability and handling of this variant, noting its precise feedback during climb, cruise, and descent phases.

Livery and Airline Context

Caledonia Airways operated for a brief period during the early 1990s, inheriting some of its brand identity from British Caledonian and British Airways influences. The aircraft depicted here, registered G-BBAF, reflects that transitional color scheme. Vast areas of neutral fuselage paint, accent stripes, and branding elements convey the style and corporate aesthetic of the airline’s short-lived era.

Repaint Textures and Base Files

Only the texture files are included in this freeware add-on, so you will need the primary model (SL10115.ZIP) by Mike Stone to complete the installation. Inside this download, you will find a dedicated base textures folder that accommodates further repainting. Enthusiasts can build on those template files to design additional unique liveries or enhance the existing artwork.

Compatibility and Considerations

This package is primarily optimized for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (often called FS9). While it may function in FS2002, support for FS2002 is not provided, and the aircraft’s bundled GPS gauge is known to be incompatible with that older simulator version. Users wanting to attempt FS2002 installation can do so at their own discretion, with the understanding that some features might not operate as intended.

Important Disclaimers

The aircraft comes “as is.” According to the developer, issues might be addressed at sole discretion, but requests for specific alterations or specialized variants will not be undertaken. If you find the aircraft suits your needs, you are welcome to enjoy it; if not, you may remove it without any obligation.

Installation Steps

  • Download and install the base model (SL10115.ZIP) by Mike Stone if not already present.
  • Copy the entire L1011 folder (from this repaint package) into your “Flight Simulator 9/aircraft” directory.
  • Load up Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, locate the Caledonia Airways L1011-500, and begin your tri-jet experience.

Additional Notes

For those who wish to perform custom liveries, the unpainted textures located in the base folder facilitate more advanced repaints. Designers and repaint enthusiasts can leverage these layered files to incorporate regional or historical airline styles for a broad fleet collection in their simulator hangar.
