This add-on refines Canberra Airport (YSCB) in Australia within Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 by specifically enabling crosswind operations on both runways while enhancing AI traffic flow. In addition, it aligns the virtual control tower’s viewpoint directly with the tower’s rooftop, so enthusiasts can observe arrivals and departures more precisely. Developed by Ray Smith, and thanks to contributions from Jim Vile and Reggie Fields, this AFCAD2 configuration integrates seamlessly with default scenery. Moreover, it has been tested in conjunction with Ultimate Traffic, although that software is not essential for functionality.

Crosswind Coordination for Non-Parallel Runways

By implementing crosswind runway usage, this configuration allows simultaneous AI landings and departures on YSCB’s two runways. Since they are not parallel, you will notice that ATIS broadcasts may occasionally mention fictitious entries; this is a typical side-effect of enabling both runways for AI scheduling. Simply disregard any such fictional information if it appears in the communications.

Technical Adjustments

Ray Smith carefully updated his original file to ensure both main landing strips can accommodate traffic. The control tower perspective is placed on the rooftop for a more authentic vantage point while in TOWER view. Although it is compatible with default airport landscaping, the developer plans to release a dedicated crosswind version tailored for Ian Thatcher’s custom scenery at a later time. Testing reveals smooth handling of AI, and if you already have a previous version of this AFCAD2, overwriting it is straightforward.

Installation Notes

File Placement
Move the AF2_YSCB.bgl file to your “Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\Scenery” directory. When prompted to overwrite an older release by Ray Smith, allow it. If you wish to keep an earlier variant by a different creator, consider relocating that file into a temporary or backup folder.
Activation
After placing the file in the correct folder, launch the simulator. The newly activated dual-runway setup will immediately take effect.

Optional Removal

Simply delete AF2_YSCB.bgl from the Addon Scenery folder if you wish to revert to the default YSCB configuration. Once removed, the simulator’s standard airport files will be restored.

Tool Requirements and Acknowledgments

This configuration was built using Lee Swordy’s remarkable AFCAD2 application (an editor for flight simulator airports). Anyone seeking to make edits of their own will benefit from AFCAD2’s functionality, such as adjusting parking spots or runway surfaces. Gratitude goes out to Jim Vile and Reggie Fields for their contributions to crosswind runway activation techniques, and of course, to Ray Smith for refining YSCB’s layout with this update. You are free to adapt these modifications further with AFCAD2 if needed.
