Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004

This versatile AFCAD2 configuration refines operations at Adelaide International Airport, allowing crosswind landings to run smoothly while integrating with the default scenery in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. Crafted by Ray Smith, with additional input from Jim Vile and Reggie Fields, it provides simmers with enhanced runway utilization and elevated realism throughout various wind conditions. Adelaide International, a major gateway for both domestic and international services across Australia, benefits from this update by making its parallel and secondary surfaces more functional under multiple scenarios.

Refined Aerodrome Layout

Within this updated file, both runways are activated to support simultaneous usage in varying winds. This approach offers more accurate air traffic flows that mirror real-world procedures. The design takes advantage of crosswind configurations, ensuring continuous arrivals and departures even when prevailing winds shift. Ray Smith’s methodology harnesses AFCAD2 settings to maintain alignment with default scenery, eliminating potential conflicts or misaligned visual elements.

Dynamic Visual Perspectives

The developer has configured airport overview vantage points from the top of the control tower. By switching to TOWER view, you will notice an elevated perspective for monitoring all activity around the airfield, especially useful for immersing yourself in busy operations. This feature aligns well with Ultimate Traffic enhancements, although it is not necessary to have Ultimate Traffic installed.

Notes on Fictional Runway Entries

Activating crosswind operations often introduces additional, non-parallel runway designations in the ATIS readout. These imaginary entries, which may appear during automated transmissions, are a known side-effect of enabling multiple runways for simultaneous use. They should be disregarded, as they do not impact actual flight paths or navigation aids.

Tailoring the Setup Further

Ray Smith encourages pilots to modify this airport file as desired. For those interested in adjusting aircraft traffic flows or tweaking parking allocations, using Lee Swordy’s renowned AFCAD2 tool is recommended. Simply open the file in AFCAD2 and adapt the gate assignments or runway properties to align with custom configurations.

Installation Steps

  1. Place the AF2_YPAD.bgl file into your Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\Scenery folder.
  2. If you are prompted to overwrite a previous version by the same author, accept the replacement. If you are uncertain or wish to keep a backup of any other version, move that older file into another folder.
  3. Start the simulator, and the updated layout will be active right away.

Removing the Update

  1. Delete the AF2_YPAD.bgl file from your Flight Simulator 9\Addon Scenery\Scenery folder.
  2. The default airport setup will then become operational again.

A warm acknowledgment goes out to Lee Swordy for developing his invaluable AFCAD2 application, which made all these modifications possible. By working closely with tools like AFCAD2 and leveraging input from individuals like Jim Vile and Reggie Fields, Ray Smith has successfully enhanced the simulation experience at Adelaide International while still preserving a high degree of authenticity.
