This freeware repaint package introduces a custom Northern Star Airlines livery for the Historic Jetliners Group (HJG) DC-9-50 base model (JT8D-17 v1.13). It has been tailored for Microsoft Flight Simulator X (though it may also run in other platforms with manual adjustments) and comes complete with optional engine smoke coordinates. Created by Tom Tiedman, this set reflects a fictional registration (N698KH) that highlights the classic lines of the McDonnell Douglas DC-9-50. To use these textures, ensure you have the HJG base pack (available separately in the Fly Away Simulation library). Below, you will discover installation steps, guidance for smoke system setups, and quick notes about panel/sound configurations.

Key Livery Characteristics and Technical Aspects

The McDonnell Douglas DC-9-50 is a short- to medium-range, narrow-body aircraft renowned for its sturdy JT8D engine series. In this repaint, the Northern Star Airlines logo and registration mark adorn the fuselage, reflecting a hypothetical carrier that values clean design and subtle detailing. Since this texture aligns with the HJG DC-9-50 JT8D-17 v1.13 specifications, the included files utilize precise geometry for engine placement and wing alignment, ensuring fidelity to real-world DC-9 layouts.

Checklist for Adding the Textures

  1. Move the included texture.Northern Star N698KH folder into your existing DC-9-50 directory (ensure you have the HJG JT8D-17 v1.13 installed).
  2. Open and modify aircraft.cfg to include the new [fltsim.X] section found in the code below. Change “X” to the subsequent available number so it blends with your current repaint list. Save your edits.
  3. For operation in Microsoft Flight Simulator X, substitute the existing panel and sound folders with FSX-compatible alternatives (this step is optional if you already have suitable panel/sound setups).
  4. When launching the simulator, look for “McDonnell Douglas” on the aircraft menu and choose “DC-9-50 (HJG)” to locate this livery.
  5. Optional: If you prefer the engine smoke effect, copy the provided [SMOKESYSTEM] section into aircraft.cfg, but be sure to remove any previously existing smoke entries first.

Remarks on Compatibility

Please note this package includes textures alone; the core HJG DC-9-50 aircraft model must be added separately from the Fly Away Simulation archive. Once everything is in place, you can enjoy this vintage twin-jet’s realistic aesthetics within the simulator environment. Special thanks to the Historic Jetliners Group for their detailed DC-9-50 platform and to Tom Tiedman for crafting this faithful repaint.
