Unzip the aircraft until you have a single package folder, then place that folder in your MSFS Community folder (inside your Packages directory) and restart the sim. If the aircraft does not appear, the package is usually nested one folder too deep, or it is payware that ships with its own installer. Add-on managers such as MSFS Addons Linker let you keep packages outside Community and toggle them on and off to speed up load times.

Stutters are usually GPU or main-thread limited. Cap your frame rate slightly below your monitor refresh, lower Terrain and Object Level of Detail, reduce render scaling, and turn off heavy options such as photogrammetry and high live-traffic settings. In FSX and Prepar3D the biggest gains come from sensible autogen and texture-resolution limits. Update your graphics driver and close background apps before flying.

Open Settings then Joystick. X-Plane usually detects the device automatically; assign axes by moving each control and choosing the matching function (pitch, roll, yaw, throttle), then map buttons for flaps, gear, views and trim. Add a small null zone to stop drift, and apply a response curve if the controls feel too sensitive near centre. Assignments are saved per device.

Good free starting points include community freeware aircraft, hand-crafted freeware airports from sites like Fly Away Simulation, and free scenery or mesh enhancements. Install one or two at a time so you can confirm each works before building a large library, and always read the install notes — some freeware needs a specific folder layout or a free dependency.

Tune the ILS frequency for the runway and set the course to the published inbound heading. Intercept the localiser at a shallow angle from below the glideslope with approach (APP) mode armed; the autopilot captures the localiser first, then the glideslope as it comes alive. Manage flaps, gear and speed on schedule, and disconnect the autopilot at your decision height to land manually.

MSFS runs on modest hardware but rewards a modern multi-core CPU, 16GB or more of RAM, an SSD and a dedicated graphics card. CPU single-thread performance and fast storage matter most for smoothness, while the GPU drives resolution and visual detail. A stable broadband connection helps because the sim streams scenery and photogrammetry while you fly.

In FS2004 (FS9), add-on aircraft go in the Aircraft folder inside your FS9 directory — unzip each aircraft so its folder sits alongside the default aircraft. Scenery goes under the Addon Scenery folder (place the scenery and texture subfolders inside it), then activate it in Settings, Scenery Library by adding the area and clicking OK so FS9 rebuilds its index. Some gauges need their files copied into the main Gauges folder. Always read the included readme, as some packages ship their own installer.

FlightGear is a genuinely free, open-source flight simulator for Windows, macOS and Linux. Download it from the official FlightGear website, then add aircraft through the built-in aircraft installer (the hangar) or by placing aircraft folders in your FlightGear Aircraft directory. It is less photoreal than MSFS but flexible, moddable and completely free, which makes it a great no-cost way to start simming.

In Train Simulator Classic, most routes, locomotives and rolling stock install through Steam or the Steam Workshop and appear automatically. Manually installed freeware is unpacked into the Assets folder inside your Train Simulator directory, keeping each provider and product folder intact. After installing, run any provided setup tool if prompted, and make sure any required payware route or dependency is also installed, or the scenario will not load.
