Experience an imaginative United States Air Force livery for the Douglas C-117D Skytrooper, originally engineered by Manfred Jahn, Alexander M. Metzger, and Hans-Joerg Naegele. This release, authored by B. Lechner, provides two separate paint variants—a modern scheme and a vintage-style rendition—tailored to pilots who enjoy operating military-themed flights in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. As this package features only the repaints, the complete freeware base model (C117D_V1_BETA.ZIP) must be acquired beforehand from the Fly Away Simulation mod library.
Two Unique Military-Inspired Finishes
Each repainted texture captures a distinct imaginary approach to how a US Air Force C-117D might look in both earlier and more recent service periods. Both designs highlight the aircraft’s robust airframe, which has its origins in the familiar DC-3 lineage. Although the actual C-117D was employed in critical logistics missions, these liveries are entirely fictional and serve purely to expand your virtual hangar options.

Installation Process and Configuration
- Extract the repaint package to a temporary folder of your choice.
- Locate your aircraft installation directory (normally found under …\SIMOBJECTS\AIRPLANES\Douglas_C-117D) and place the “texture._USAF (new)” or “texture._USAF (old)” folders there.
- Open your aircraft.cfg file and insert the appropriate configuration entries. Replace
[fltsim.XX]
with the correct sequential number.

Technical Observations
The Douglas C-117D, a refined derivative of the celebrated DC-3/C-47 platform, boasted reinforced structures and updated avionics to handle challenging operational demands. Many operators, including the US Air Force, relied on this sturdy airframe for cargo transport, troop movement, and other tasks requiring reliable short- or medium-range capability. By incorporating these fictional repaints, simmers can experiment with a more personalized approach to how these aircraft might be represented in military service.
Key Add-On Information
This repaint bundle underscores faithful detailing while preserving each paint layout’s unique character. Arrival in your virtual flight lineup will require ensuring you have the freeware C-117D base model installed. If you enjoy historical or hypothetical military scenarios in Flight Simulator, these textures cater to both worlds by offering older and more modern marking styles. As always, proper assignment of textures and entries within your simulator’s configuration is essential for smooth operation.
