Douglas C-117D Skytrooper brings the Super DC-3’s US Navy and Marine Corps workhorse to Flight Simulator X with a Basler BT-67–inspired virtual cockpit, authentic slow-start radial engines, and refined flight dynamics. A dedicated fuel and payload manager plus built-in engine stress and battery failures add credible operational depth for vintage transport flying.

Flight Simulator X Prepar3D

The C117D Skytrooper or Super DC-3 was a medium-range transport serving with the US Navy and Marines. The package includes a VC adapted from the Basler BT-67. Model features include a realistic slow radial engine start, a fuel and payload manager, and built-in engine stress and battery failures. Sound is aliased to the default DC3 (replacement sound pack recommended in the readme). Historical research by John Detrick, models by Manfred Jahn, flight dynamics by Alexander M. Metzger, gauges, animations, and failure conditions by Hansjoerg Naegele; watch those failure conditions!

Installation:

  • Extract the zip to a temporary folder or open it in Windows Explorer.
  • You should see three subfolders: Effects, Simobjects, and Sound. You should be able to copy these three folders directly to your main "Flight Simulator X" folder using "merge" or "integrate folders" mode when asked (do NOT use "replace"). Should you have any misgivings about this procedure play it safe -- enter the source subfolders individually and copy the files to the appropriate FSX target folders.
  • The single aircraft provided in this version will show up as "Douglas C-117D" in the Flight Simulator's aircraft selection menu.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D add-on

  1. Extract the downloaded archive

    Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.

  2. Place files per the readme

    Most FSX add-ons go into one of: SimObjects\Airplanes\, Addon Scenery\, Effects\, or Gauges\.

  3. Always read the included readme

    Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.

    This airplane is all chopped up in external view, cockpits look great though. FSX SP2 only, not gold or acceleration, is that a problem??

    This is amazing freeware. If anyone out there wants to fly a DC3 type plane but with a modern cockpit and autopilot you need to jump on this.

    This may be the best freeware plane I have ever downloaded. I have some payware planes that are not this good. The graphics are unbelievable! The flight characteristics are very realistic. It may take me a while to master this one. Great job! Thanks!
