This repaint showcases a Royal Egyptian Air Force livery for Rob Richardson’s Armstrong Whitworth Meteor NF11, originally produced as a twin-engined jet night fighter. The repaint, authored by Peter Watkins, reflects the markings of aircraft 1428—one of just a handful of Meteor NF13 variants acquired by Egypt. During the Suez Campaign in 1956, several of these airframes were destroyed on the ground, underscoring their historical significance and limited service.

Authentic Visuals and Aircraft Background

The Meteor platform served as a transitional replacement for de Havilland Mosquito variants, although it retained some of the earlier jet’s structural elements. This particular model blends the T.7 two-seat trainer layout, featured in the cockpit arrangement, with the fuselage and tail surfaces borrowed from the F.8. The result is a seamless combination ensuring both performance and multi-role flexibility. An extended nose cone houses an AI Mk 10 radar (an adaptation of the Westinghouse SCR-720 from the 1940s), while wing-mounted cannons replaced the nose guns to accommodate the radar installation. This repaint specifically highlights the visual details symbolic of the Royal Egyptian Air Force.

Step-by-Step Integration

Before adding this repaint, you will need to install Rob Richardson’s free Armstrong Whitworth Meteor NF11 base model (available in the Fly Away Simulation library). Once you have the original files on your system, follow these instructions:

  • Place the new texture folder into the “Armstrong Whitworth Meteor NF11” directory, which can be found in your FSX SimObjects “Airplanes” folder.
  • Edit the aircraft configuration (aircraft.cfg) file by adding the corresponding repaint entry. Simply replace “xx” with the next sequence number of your existing sections.

description=As a night fighter, the Meteor again replaced the Mosquito however it was never more than an interim measure. The Mosquito night fighter had remained in use even though it was largely obsolete. Gloster proposed a night fighter design to meet the Air Ministry specification for the Mosquito replacement, based on the two seater trainer, with the pilot in the front seat and the navigator in the rear. Once accepted however, the work passed to Armstrong Whitworth for both the detail design and production; the first prototype flew on 31 May 1950. Although based on the T.7 twin seater, it used the fuselage and tail of the F.8, and the longer wings of the F.3. An extended nose contained the AI Mk 10 (the 1940s Westinghouse SCR-720) Air Intercept radar. As a consequence the 20 mm cannons were moved into the wings, outboard of the engines. A ventral fuel tank and wing mounted drop tanks completed the Armstrong Whitworth Meteor NF.11.

Practical Notes

This add-on does not include the underlying aircraft model; it is strictly a repaint. The required base package remains freeware, and you can obtain it from the Fly Away Simulation archive. Any future updates or revisions to the repaint will be credited to Peter Watkins.

Credits and Acknowledgments

All core design elements belong to Rob Richardson, whose high-quality Meteor NF11 serves as the foundation. The distinctive Egyptian Air Force textures have been meticulously prepared by Peter Watkins to ensure historical fidelity and a visually immersive experience.
