Editorial
Having never been to Johannesburg, it was a good idea to try out this old-school FS2004 Johannesburg International Airport scenery package. This mod takes many photorealistic images of the airport, and many hours of careful planning and attention to detail, to fit together what is a very impressive rendition of the airport. I found that the work in building placement, from terminals to taxiways, was far improved by including this.
The old JIA felt really poorly built for me; dour and generic. This helps to get you around the solution without too many issues and it also ensures that you can get the help that you need to locate each part of the airport accurately. The old version felt so dour and generic that the airport just felt out of kilter with the images you would see of it online. It just looked like a totally different place, in truth, and this corrects that problem immediately
From new ground textures to make the whole area look more up-to-date to accurate placement of hangers and buildings, JIA soon looks a lot livelier when you use this add-on. While other more in-depth options may exist out there, this is about as good as you could hope for when it comes to a freeware add-on.
The ILS alignments are far more accurate, too, which I was very happy about. It’s these little changes that make navigation and arrival at this spot so much easier. If you find that spending time at this airport is more frustrating than it has to be, then this can be a pretty decent option to get around that problem once and for all.
It’s not the most creative add-on and it does not add anything above and beyond the call of duty. That being said, it does everything that I expected – it makes a very important airport stop feeling so dour and generic. For that alone, its more than worth the investment.
