This freeware repaint offers the updated Spanair color scheme for the default Airbus A321 in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Developed by Anthony Smith, it showcases the airline’s newer branding, which was first applied to the Airbus A320 series before being adapted across additional models. While Spanair no longer operates, many enthusiasts continue to appreciate its legacy of scheduled services around Europe.
Distinctive Elements of the Spanair Livery
The design highlights a modernized fuselage featuring streamlined corporate graphics and a refreshed tail emblem. In reality, the aircraft involved would often serve medium-range routes, with the Airbus A321 accommodating higher passenger capacity compared to smaller variants in the A320 family. This repaint replicates Spanair’s exterior details, enhancing authenticity within FSX’s virtual skies.
Key Technical Notes
- Base Model Required: Only contains external textures; the official default Airbus A321 in FSX is required. You can find it in the simulator’s default aircraft collection.
- Repaint Author: Anthony Smith meticulously adapted the textures to match Spanair’s updated branding.
- Compatibility: Exclusively optimized for Microsoft Flight Simulator X, utilizing the base Airbus_A321 folder structure.
Installation Process and File Updates
Before you begin, make sure to back up any original files in your SimObjects folder. Follow these sequential steps to ensure a successful installation:
- Open your main Flight Simulator folder and locate the SimObjects/airplanes/Airbus_A321 directory.
- Place the texture.Spanair new folder into the Airbus_A321 folder, positioning it alongside the existing texture sets.
- Open the aircraft.cfg file in the same Airbus_A321 directory using a basic text editor (like Notepad). Look for the most recent
[fltsim.x]
entry. - Copy the following block of code, then paste it at the bottom of all other
[fltsim.x]
sections. Replace theXX
with the next sequential number:
[fltsim.XX] title=Airbus A321 Spanair new sim=Airbus_A321 model= panel= sound= texture=Spanair new kb_checklists=AirbusA321_check kb_reference=AirbusA321_ref atc_id=EC-HPM atc_airline=SPANAIR atc_flight_number=SP2143 ui_manufacturer=Airbus ui_type=A321 ui_variation=Spanair new ui_typerole=Commercial Airliner ui_createdby=Microsoft Corporation description=This spanair is of a real world aircraft in a new Spanair company livery. Repaint by Tony Smith.
Once complete, verify that the numerical sequence continues correctly without gaps. If the simulator does not detect this repaint, double-check that the texture= line within the code and the actual texture folder name match precisely.
Additional Tips from the Developer
- Location of Files
- Placing the repaint file directly beside existing texture folders keeps it organized and easy to access.
- Matching Texture Names
- Ensure the folder name (texture.Spanair new) matches the reference in your aircraft.cfg entry to avoid missing liveries.
Enjoy flying with Spanair’s modernized livery on the Airbus A321. Remember, this repaint is freeware and requires no additional purchase. The base aircraft model for Microsoft Flight Simulator X is not included and must be obtained separately, but it is available in the Flight Simulator’s default library or within Fly Away Simulation’s resources. Fly carefully and experience this classic Spanish operator’s aesthetic in your virtual hangar!
