This freeware add-on showcases a specially outfitted Airbus A318-112 CJ Elite serving the Saudi Red Crescent Authority (SRCA) for urgent medical missions. Developed for Microsoft Flight Simulator X, it includes both a detailed external model and a fully equipped virtual cockpit. Designed by the Project Airbus team, with a repaint crafted by Marco Fischbach, this package accurately represents an aircraft utilized for medevac (medical evacuation) services across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and nearby Middle Eastern regions.

A318 in SRCA Configuration

The Saudi Red Crescent Authority oversees emergency medical care in five major administrative zones within Saudi Arabia. This Airbus A318, flown initially by Perfect Aviation of Portugal, is optimized for swift patient transport and in-flight care. Its role as a medevac aircraft demands reliable performance and adaptability, making this model a practical choice for flight simulation enthusiasts wanting to replicate critical rescue operations.

Included Components and Installation

The package features the complete Project Airbus A318 model integrated with a full virtual cockpit, as well as custom textures for SRCA medevac operations. To install, extract the ZIP contents into your “SimObjects/Airplanes” folder within Flight Simulator X, then transfer any files from the Effects directory to the main Effects folder of Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It has been validated to work with SP2, ensuring compatibility with advanced animations and lighting.

Repaint Author and Credits

This elaborate repaint, illustrating SRCA’s distinctive markings, has been provided by Marco Fischbach. The original aircraft model and features come from the following Project Airbus contributors:

  • Andy Warden – External model design
  • Thomas Ruth – Virtual cockpit design, texturing, XML coding
  • Peter Binamira – Flight dynamics and sounds
  • Demetris Themistocleous – Base textures and liveries
  • Alessandro Savarese – Base textures
  • John Tavendale, Derek Mayer – Liveries
  • Matthew Murray – Corporate design and organization
  • Gianmarco Bettiol, Nick Wu, Trevor Slack, Alexander Kvitta, David Bromwich – Feedback

Standout Features

Drawing on the Project Airbus engineering, the model benefits from numerous XML-controlled functionalities. These include a pressurization outflow valve that adjusts cabin pressure carefully, ground spoilers that deploy automatically, and pack outlet doors that modulate airflow for temperature management. Notably, animating the idle reversers adds an extra layer of authenticity when engaging reverse thrust at lower power settings.

In addition, the model incorporates dynamic jetwash effects, realistic drooping control surfaces after engine shutdown, and parallel bogies (for double-bogey configurations). On top of that, doors, cargo hatches, and service panels can be opened individually, enhancing immersion for virtual ground operations.

Animations and Lighting

Several custom lighting effects are included, such as navigation lamps, beacons, and touchdown sparks. Wing views provide glimpses of the in-flight control surfaces, while dynamic shine accentuates the aircraft’s exterior under varying sunlight conditions. The landing gear extension and retraction sequence follows real-world procedures, meticulously replicating the aircraft’s authentic behavior.

Door Operations

L2 & Cargo Doors
Managed by the tail hook function (must be assigned in flight simulator controls)
R1 & R2
Controlled through wing fold/unfold (also needs a custom key assignment)

Test Flying Notes

The flight dynamics underwent thorough testing by professional pilots and experienced simmers, such as Capt. Manny Osias, F/O Spike Acenas, and others. Their feedback helped refine engine response, handling in climb and descent, and overall maneuverability to align with the real Airbus A318’s performance characteristics.

This SRCA A318 CJ Elite stands as a meticulous freeware release for those wanting to explore the unique realm of airborne emergency response within Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Its distinctive livery, comprehensive systems, and medevac-centric details lend themselves to compelling scenarios in the virtual skies.

Can't get external lights to work (except landing and cabin/logo lights). Have confirmed effects folder is installed in the right place. Everything else about the airplane works great.
