This freeware repaint package offers a detailed depiction of the US Navy Grumman F-14A VF-1 Wolfpack (1975) for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. It includes comprehensive textures for 12 distinct aircraft, all reimagined by developer Hartwig Ullrich to capture the authentic markings of VF-1 during the mid-1970s. You will need the freeware AI model by Nick Black (F-14 Tomcat) from the Fly Away Simulation library to use these textures.
Background on This Tomcat Variation
The Grumman F-14A was a carrier-based, twin-engine fighter that served as a cornerstone of US Navy air superiority. Introduced in the 1970s, it featured variable-geometry wings (sometimes called “swing wings”) that provided enhanced maneuverability at various speeds. VF-1, commonly referred to as Wolfpack, was among the earliest units to operate the F-14A. These repaints represent aircraft markings used around 1975, illustrating the distinctive grey, red, and black accents associated with this squadron’s original livery.
Key Repaint Details
- Textures for 12 Aircraft: Each repaint reproduces subtle differences among the fleet, reflecting the individualized appearance of VF-1 Tomcats.
- Compatibility: Designed specifically for the AI F-14A Tomcat model by Nick Black. This package only provides liveries, so the base model must be present.
- Enhanced Lighting Alignment: These skins integrate carefully placed lights to match the painted effects on the fuselage.
Installation Steps
- Place the texture folders contained in this repaint package into the folder where you have Nick Black’s AI F-14A Tomcat installed.
- Locate the aircraft.cfg file associated with your AI F-14A Tomcat. Open it and add the [fltsim.X] entries provided. Make sure to adjust the numbering so that they follow on from your existing entries.
- Apply the same renumbering to ensure each new repaint has a correct sequence in the aircraft.cfg.
- Update the lights section of the aircraft.cfg with the data below so that the external lighting aligns properly with the textures.

Acknowledgments
These repaints are derived from the paint kit included with Nick Black’s AI F-14 Tomcat package. Developer Hartwig Ullrich meticulously adapted them to replicate VF-1 Wolfpack markings.
Nick Black is credited for the original AI F-14 model and its paint kit. All textures within this repaint package aim to authentically recreate the early operations of this legendary fighter in US Navy service.
For the best results, ensure that you have downloaded Nick Black’s F-14A Tomcat AI base model and have it set up correctly in your Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 environment. Once everything is installed, these VF-1 Wolfpack repaints will display the iconic mid-1970s look of the Tomcat, complete with period markings and squadron insignia.
