FSX / P3D scenery

FSX Nellis AFB Scenery

Nellis Air Force Base (KLSV) receives a sharper, more authentic layout in Microsoft Flight Simulator X, with expanded military parking, adjusted taxiways and aprons, and better-placed hangars and support buildings. Static vehicles, ground equipment, perimeter lighting, and desert landscaping add day-to-day operational atmosphere, while the scenery uses stock objects and requires no third-party libraries.

Flight Simulator X Prepar3D

This freeware package refines the stock representation of Nellis Air Force Base in Flight Simulator X. It enhances the airfield with meticulously placed facilities, expanded parking areas, and newly incorporated static details that align with real-world references. The developer, Jim Cook, has ensured that each addition remains faithful to FSX standards without requiring third-party libraries.

Notable Improvements for KLSV

  • Increased Parking Capacity: This update integrates numerous Military_Cargo and Military_Combat parking spots, which accommodate various aircraft types commonly stationed at or visiting Nellis AFB.
  • Fire Station and Apparatus: A dedicated fire station area now features properly placed fire trucks, improving realism for emergency readiness.
  • Exchanged Default Structures: Several original FSX buildings are replaced or relocated to mirror the actual layout. Additional hangars, administrative blocks, and maintenance sheds have been inserted for an immersive environment.
  • Static Vehicles and Ground Equipment: The installation includes parked fuel trucks and service vehicles. These elements offer the impression of a fully operational base, reflecting typical support operations.
  • Refined Taxiways and Aprons: Taxiway alignments and ramp areas have been adjusted according to data from AirNav and satellite imagery. This step ensures safer transitions and optimal ground maneuvering.

Visual Enhancements Around Las Vegas

Nellis AFB, situated northeast of the Las Vegas metropolitan area, sits at the heart of advanced flight training activities. This mod brings additional details to the base perimeter, such as light poles and palm trees, lending authenticity to the desert environment.

Compatibility Considerations

This version employs stock FSX objects, so no additional libraries are necessary. It functions seamlessly with optional utilities like Ultimate Terrain and FSGenesis landclass data, though neither is required. The scenery aligns well with Just Flight’s Military Plus Packs, which many simulation enthusiasts may already utilize.

Tools, Accuracy, and Future Plans

Jim Cook leveraged Flight 1’s AFX application and Instant Scenery to refine placement of buildings, aprons, and ground elements. Alignments were based on publicly available diagrams and high-resolution satellite images for precise coordination. The developer intends to improve other military installations in FSX as time allows.

Installation Procedure

  1. Unzip both AFX_KLSV_JC.bgl and KLSV_JC.bgl.
  2. Place these files into the “Addon Scenery/Scenery” directory within your FSX installation folder.
  3. Restart FSX to load the updated airfield configuration.

All modifications and design elements are by Jim Cook.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D scenery
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place scenery in Addon Scenery

Create a folder under FSX\Addon Scenery\ containing scenery and texture sub-folders.
  3. Activate in Scenery Library

In FSX, go to Settings → Scenery Library → Add Area. Higher priority means it overrides lower entries for the same location.
  4. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
