Located in East Hampton on Long Island, KHTO serves as a hub for various general aviation operations. This freeware scenery pack, created by Jim Cook, refreshes the default rendition in Microsoft Flight Simulator X by refining airport geometry and introducing new visual elements. Serving leisure flyers and local traffic alike, East Hampton Airport’s proximity to coastal environments adds an extra layer of realism to this upgrade. Enjoy an updated layout that aligns more closely with real-world charts and satellite data.
Enhanced Details for KHTO
This custom version blends accuracy with aesthetic improvements. Out-of-date aprons have been reshaped to match current airport diagrams, and taxiways are positioned more precisely. These modifications reduce alignment inconsistencies and help pilots navigate the tarmac seamlessly.
Notable Scenery Refinements
- Updated Road Connections: Redesigned service roads and thoroughfares reflect the actual traffic flow on the airport perimeter.
- Building Replacements: Default structures are replaced with more authentic hangars, office facilities, and other on-site buildings.
- Static Vehicles and Aircraft: Parked vehicles, ground equipment, and other objects add immersion and bring a lived-in look to the airfield.
- Additional Light Poles: Enhanced night lighting improves visibility during dusk or after-dark operations, making the environment safer and more engaging.
Underlying Tools and Compatibility
Jim Cook leveraged Flight 1’s AFX program and Instant Scenery to make these upgrades. Although Ultimate Terrain and FSGenesis mesh products were used during development, neither is strictly required for proper functionality. The scenery relies exclusively on stock FSX objects, eliminating the need for any extra library installation.
Installation Steps
- Unzip the archive and locate the two files named KHTO_AFX_JC.bgl and KHTO_JC.bgl.
- Place them in your “Addon Scenery/Scenery” folder within your main simulator directory.
- Restart Microsoft Flight Simulator X to activate the enhancements.
Additional Notes from the Developer
All modifications use AirNav data and recent Google Earth imagery to ensure maximum fidelity. This approach aligns the airport’s runways, aprons, and surrounding features as closely as possible to real-world references. Jim Cook has crafted these improvements to enrich the flying environment for enthusiasts who visit East Hampton Airport in the simulator.
