Alf’s UK Airfields Volume 20 upgrades three often-overlooked strips—Priory Farm (X3PF), Walney Island/Barrow (EGNL), and White Waltham (EGLM)—with improved airport layouts, custom models, and better-placed buildings and clutter guided by geo-referenced imagery. This freeware package enhances multiple lesser-known UK airfields within Microsoft Flight Simulator X, providing extra realism and detail where the default scenery lacks depth. Created by Alf Denham, it incorporates custom objects and refined layouts compiled through various tools, offering a more immersive experience at Priory Farm (X3PF), Walney Island/Barrow (EGNL), and White Waltham (EGLM).

Visual Updates and Geo-Referencing

This volume uses Google Earth imagery along with map references from reputable flight guides to refine each location’s environment. The goal is not to reproduce every minor element precisely but to significantly enhance regions that typically appear sparse in default layouts. Objects are placed and tailored to reflect each airfield’s general footprint and surrounding landclass, augmenting overall immersion.

Dedicated Models and Custom Assets

The developer relied on Instant Object Maker v1.2 for structural designs when default library objects could not replicate specific building shapes or additional features. Combined with the FSX SDK Object Placement Tool and Airport Design Editor, these specialized models further distinguish the scenery from standard assets.

Covered UK Airfields

Priory Farm (X3PF)
A privately used strip that now includes intentional details replicating its rural surroundings. Updated buildings and ground textures convey a more realistic portrayal of this small facility.
Walney Island/Barrow (EGNL)
Sitting near Barrow-in-Furness, this airfield supports civil and industrial operations. The rendition in this package enriches apron details and incorporates fresh structural elements to match its coastal positioning.
White Waltham (EGLM)
Located in Berkshire, this classic grass aerodrome sees a transformation with extra hangars, signage, and added clutter that more closely reflects its bustling general aviation character.

Technical Implementation

All sceneries align with Microsoft Flight Simulator X Service Pack 2. Although functionality in other configurations may vary, having SP1 and SP2 installed is recommended for optimal results. Since the design is integrated into FSX’s standard landscapes, significant discrepancies could arise if photo-realistic enhancements are present; however, the custom landclass additions aim to maintain a cohesive appearance.

Installation Procedure

  • Extract all files into a temporary directory.
  • Review the included ReadMe files for each airfield and follow the specific guidelines provided.
  • Employ the usual FSX scenery library process to incorporate the folders. In Windows 7 or later versions, ensure correct folder paths and permissions before enabling in-sim.
  • Removal simply involves deleting or deactivating the installed folders from the scenery library.

This collection of enhancements by Alf Denham aims to elevate smaller fields around the UK to a higher standard of immersion. The package is entirely free for enthusiasts seeking additional realism, particularly for those who appreciate exploring lesser-known aerodromes throughout the region.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D add-on

  1. Extract the downloaded archive

    Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.

  2. Place files per the readme

    Most FSX add-ons go into one of: SimObjects\Airplanes\, Addon Scenery\, Effects\, or Gauges\.

  3. Always read the included readme

    Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
