FSX / P3D scenery

FSX Alfs UK Airfields Volume 22 Scenery

Rochester Airfield (EGTO) near Chatham gets a richer, more believable look with custom buildings, improved object placement, and optional static aircraft, plus a photoreal Chatham Dockyard ground object for extra local flavor in FSX. Compiled from aerial references and tailored to the default scenery, it requires FSX SP2 for best results.

General:
In FSX scenery there are still many small airfields in the UK with little or no details. I have tried to improve this in a small way. I do not not aim to make them accurate, only better.

This was compiled using aerial views from Google Earth, Pooleys UK Flight Guide, and the FSX SDK Object Placement Tool and Airport Design Editor v1.47. Extra items were produced using Instant Object Maker v1.2.

I partly use the standard FSX scenery objects but for items that combinations of FSX objects could not mimic I have made dedicated objects. I have also started adding a few landclass 'objects' using Google Earth. I hope it does improve some of the smaller airfields. It was designed to use with FSX SP2 so there may be problems if SP1 and SP2 are not installed. NOTE: The sceneries were made to fit into the FSX standard scenery, discrepancies may occur with commercial photo-realistic addon scenery. There may be a few problems with lighting and some objects. It would seem to depend on whether FSX or FSX Accelerator is being used and whether it is run with XP/Vista or with Windows7. For this I apologise. FlightSimTools Addon Converter X may help but this is a commercial program.

Acknowledgments:
Many thanks to Charles Watson who initially asked if I might have a go at Rochester. When I said I had difficulty in obtaining pictures of the airport buildings he approached Kelvin Carr, the Rochester Airport manager. Kelvin very generously allowed Charles to record dozens of pictures of all corners of the airport which he duly sent me with copious notes. Using Instant Object Maker I have used these pictures to try and reproduce recognisable buildings, though I had to make a few bits up. Charles then acted as the main Beta tester. In order to double check a few things, Gerry Francis acted as a second Beta tester. Some of the static aircraft were produced courtesy of Don Grovestine's SAMM program.

Installing:
First unzip files into a temporary folder. See Read_Me texts in appropriate folders. (See my Windows 7 Read-Me) To uninstall just remove the files again.

Future Projects:
If anyone else has a local small airfield they would like me to have a go at AND can supply a good set of pictures of the airfield buildings AND the airfield shows well in Google Earth AND is prepared to act as Beta tester, then feel free to contact me on the email addresses below, but I make no promises!

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D scenery

  1. Extract the downloaded archive

    Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.

  2. Place scenery in Addon Scenery

    Create a folder under FSX\Addon Scenery\ containing scenery and texture sub-folders.

  3. Activate in Scenery Library

    In FSX, go to Settings → Scenery Library → Add Area. Higher priority means it overrides lower entries for the same location.

  4. Always read the included readme

    Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.

    This is a brilliant add on that is VERY accurate and detailed. If you live near this airport or have been to it, I would highly recommend downloading this add on. It is a very big file though, and I had to turn down some of the traffic settings so that my flight sim stayed smooth. Thanks so much for making this add on, I really like it! : )
