This repaint package offers a faithful portrayal of the F4U-1A Corsair, showcasing Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-312’s storied “Miss Caroline” livery and providing a fully freeware base model for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It incorporates the original design by Guy Hulin and has been modernized by Mark Rooks of RSDG Aircraft to support contemporary sim standards, delivering historical accuracy alongside smooth virtual cockpit integration. Enthusiasts will appreciate the nuances of this iconic World War II fighter, including its notable service history with the “Checkerboards” squadron.

Unique Squadron Heritage and Aircraft Significance

Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-312 was formally organized on June 1, 1943, at Page Field, Parris Island under the leadership of Major Richard M. Day. The squadron soon adopted the distinctive checkerboard motif on their aircraft surfaces. Notably, these Corsairs achieved a groundbreaking feat on June 8, 1953, when Captain Jesse Folmar downed a MiG-15 jet fighter using 20 mm cannon fire—an accomplishment that placed the squadron among the first piston-engine units to claim a jet kill. The nickname “Miss Caroline,” accompanying this repaint, represents a nod to the squadron’s storied lineage and formidable prowess during the Korean conflict and beyond.

Refined Artwork and Credits

Textures by Mark Rooks

All external paintwork and FSX-specific updates have been meticulously created by Mark Rooks of RSDG Aircraft. Every surface reflects the distinctive checkerboard markings of VMF-312, captured with care to replicate real-world references, while additional detailing highlights fuselage lines and accents. This treatment ensures authentic visual cues when observing the aircraft’s unique silhouette from any angle in the simulator.

Original Model by Guy Hulin

The core F4U-1A Corsair design originates from Guy Hulin. His foundation includes correct proportioning of the iconic inverted gull wing, precise geometry for flight surfaces, and accurate modeling of the radial engine intake and cowling. This package brings those elements forward into modern simulator compatibility, guaranteeing an immersive flight experience.

Steps for Installing This Add-On

  1. First, create a backup of your original files in case you need to restore them later.
  2. Extract all downloaded content to a convenient location (such as your desktop or another temporary folder).
  3. Locate the newly unzipped folder named “VMF-312 Corsair”. Ensure this folder contains six essential components: aircraft.cfg, .air file, model, panel, sound, and texture.
  4. Move or copy the “VMF-312 Corsair” folder, with all those sub-items, into the aircraft directory of Microsoft Flight Simulator X. By default, this directory can be found at:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes

  1. Place the included gauges into your simulator’s main Gauges folder if they are provided separately. Make sure they are fully unzipped before installation.

Additional Technical Notes

After moving all files, confirm that the aircraft appears in your simulator’s aircraft selection menu. This package also contains historical photographs and factual squadron background material, adding context to this particular repaint. As a freeware product, the entire model and repaint can be freely enjoyed by flight simulation enthusiasts looking to embrace an iconic World War II fighter in modern sim environments.

Developers’ Perspectives

The content and special text shared by creator Col. Robert K Suchke pay homage to military traditions and the pride of “Airborne,” “Rangers,” and “Special Forces.” Below is a restyled version of the original remarks regarding these unique references:

The Creations (Airborne Version)
And the Lord God spoke to the heavens, stating, “Bring forth Airborne.” At once, clouds parted and a sky full of parachutes appeared. God saw this was good, for these were the Airborne.

Then, God commanded, “Let there be Rangers.” The earth trembled, darkness reigned momentarily, and a legion of rugged warriors, bearing Ranger tabs, emerged. God recognized their prowess, for they were the Rangers.

Once more, God declared, “Let there be Special Forces.” Lightning flashed and thunder rumbled as mountains erupted. Through unified efforts, an exceptional team of individuals in green berets rose from land, sea, and sky to bring peace. Their abilities were extraordinary, for they were the Special Forces.

Finally, God proclaimed, “Let all who are hesitant and frail come forth.” And they crawled into the daylight, wavering as they moved. God saw their struggles, for they were the Legs.

This narrative, contributed by Col. Robert K Suchke, stands as a spirited tribute to various branches of specialized military units. Meanwhile, references to “Fire Ball” within this add-on allude to Mark Rooks, the developer who thoughtfully updated and repainted this F4U-1A Corsair for enhanced use within modern simulations.

Enjoy this unique rendition of the F4U Corsair, brought to you by Mark Rooks of RSDG Aircraft, with core designs by Guy Hulin, as a complete freeware package for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Fly safely and immerse yourself in the vintage combat aviation era while reviving the legendary exploits of VMF-312 “Checkerboards.”

Credit for the first jet, (a Me 262) shot down by gunfire, belongs to five pilots from No 401 Squadron RCAF on October 5th. Flying a high patrol over the Arnhem-Nijmegen area the twelve Spitfires from 401 Sq soon spotted a Me 262 diving toward Nijmegen at 1445hrs.

The Me 262 did show some fight and returned fire on several occasions with little result. The Me 262 was hit by five individual pilots causing it to burn in the air and crash in friendly territory.
