Fix a train simulator that will not launch, crashes or loses DLC with safe checks for files, drivers, settings, storage and third-party add-ons.
A train simulator usually stops working because its game files, settings, graphics driver, add-ons or content database are damaged or incompatible. Restart the PC, remove third-party content, verify the installation, reset graphics settings and update the GPU driver. The exact fix depends on whether it fails at launch, crashes, or only loses content.
Which train simulator is not working?
The correct repair depends on the exact product: Train Simulator Classic, Train Sim World and Trainz use different engines, content systems and configuration files. Confirm the full title and platform before deleting or resetting anything.
If Train Simulator Classic does nothing after pressing Play, follow our Train Simulator Classic launch checklist. Trainz users should use the Trainz-specific launch and database recovery steps, while repeated Unreal Engine or out-of-memory failures are covered in our Train Sim World crash diagnosis.
What does the failure tell you?
The point at which the simulator fails usually identifies the most likely cause.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens after Play | Stuck process, blocked executable, missing runtime or damaged files | Restart, check for a background process, then verify the installation |
| Logo appears, then the desktop returns | Bad settings, incompatible add-on, graphics driver or content database fault | Start without add-ons and reset the simulator's settings |
| Black screen or display error | Unsupported resolution, wrong GPU or damaged graphics configuration | Use safe/default graphics settings and select the dedicated GPU |
| Only one route, train or scenario fails | Missing dependencies, damaged DLC or incompatible custom content | Test a default train on a default route |
| Routes or DLC are absent | Content not installed, wrong account, unavailable library drive or incomplete download | Check the client's installed-content list and storage location |
| Freezes after loading | Insufficient memory, storage pressure, add-ons or excessive graphics settings | Lower texture and shadow settings, then test without custom content |
How do I fix a train simulator that will not work?
Use the following order so that each test rules out one cause without damaging routes, saves or custom assets.
- Restart the whole system. Close the simulator and its game client, then restart the PC or fully power-cycle the console. A hidden or suspended process can prevent a second launch even though no window is visible.
- Check updates and free storage. Install pending simulator, game-client, operating-system and console updates. Keep enough free space for updates to unpack; having room equal only to the advertised download size may not be sufficient.
- Test a clean, default session. Disable recently installed locomotives, routes, reskins, script packs and other third-party modifications. Load a built-in train, route and scenario. If that works, the core simulator is sound and the fault lies with optional content or one of its dependencies.
- Verify or repair the installation. Use the game client's file verification feature rather than downloading individual DLL files from the web. Verification replaces missing or altered core files, although it can also overwrite deliberate modifications to default files.
- Reset settings safely. Back up the simulator's user-data folder, then rename its configuration or cache folder so the programme can create a clean one. Do not delete a Trainz content database or a route library at random; use the simulator's own database-repair or cache-rebuild tool where provided.
- Repair the graphics setup. Update the driver directly through the GPU vendor's installed software, ensure a laptop uses its dedicated GPU, and return resolution, shadows, anti-aliasing and texture settings to conservative values. A black screen after changing display mode usually points to the saved graphics configuration rather than damaged rolling stock.
- Check runtimes and security software. Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ and DirectX components supplied with the simulator where applicable. Review antivirus quarantine and controlled-folder alerts, but restore or permit a file only when it belongs to a trusted installation; do not disable protection globally.
- Restore add-ons one group at a time. Add routes and rolling stock back in small batches, testing after each batch. A mistake we see constantly is restoring every mod immediately, which also restores the original fault.
On a console, skip driver and runtime repairs. Concentrate on a full power cycle, system and game updates, installed-content management, available storage and a final reinstall. Avoid deleting local save data unless you have confirmed that it is backed up or synchronised.
Why does the simulator run but my routes or trains are missing?
Missing content usually means the DLC is not installed in the active library, its storage drive is unavailable, or a custom route lacks required assets.
- Confirm that the DLC belongs to the account being used and is marked as installed.
- Check that an external or secondary library drive is connected and recognised.
- Verify the simulator files after an interrupted update or disk error.
- Read the custom route's requirements; owning the route itself does not supply every third-party dependency.
- Do not install content intended for a different simulator or edition merely because the folder names look similar.
For Classic, our Steam installation, DLC and add-on location guide explains how to distinguish an incomplete installation from content placed in the wrong folder.
Will verifying files or reinstalling remove my add-ons?
File verification normally preserves separate custom content, but it can replace modified default files; reinstalling may leave user folders behind or remove them depending on the simulator and platform.
Back up custom routes, scenarios, consists, saves, control profiles and any files you edited before either operation. Reinstall only after a clean configuration and verified files have failed, because reinstalling the programme while retaining a corrupt settings folder often reproduces the same problem.
