This freeware update completely restructures and refines LIRF (Fiumicino International Airport) in Rome, Italy, for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Created by Ray Smith, it introduces multi-runway operations (when desired), more accurate parking placements, and an expanded Terminal 3 to accommodate heavy aircraft. Additionally, runway and taxiway data are brought into alignment with real-world positions so that virtual pilots can operate more precisely.
Major Enhancements at Fiumicino
Fiumicino International Airport, often referred to as Leonardo da Vinci Airport, is Italy’s primary gateway. This add-on alters its default layout using the latest Airport Design Editor, ensuring taxiway routes and signage closely match current procedures. In one configuration, runway 16C/34C is converted into a taxiway and referenced as “D,” while the other setup enables three fully functional runways to support simultaneous departures and arrivals.
The airport’s visual environment is also considerably enhanced here. You will notice additional gates, some large enough for the Airbus A380, and more comprehensive support for ground vehicles and fueling. These improvements assist with simulating realistic airline traffic flows and facilitate smoother operations on the apron.
Available Configurations
LIRF_ADE_RS.BGL: Adheres to the original runway assignments, leaving runway 16C/34C closed. The middle strip is instead utilized as taxiway D and will not host takeoff or landing.
LIRF_ADE_CW_RS.BGL: Activates crosswind capability and authorizes all three runways to function concurrently, enabling diverse parallel and crosswind operations for more dynamic traffic patterns.
LIRF_ADE_OBJ.BGL: Provides essential objects and extended features needed to visualize the newly added elements, including the modified terminal areas.
Installation Procedure
- Remove or overwrite any prior LIRF updates by Ray Smith, or by other creators, to prevent conflicts.
- Choose one of the two BGL files (LIRF_ADE_RS.BGL or LIRF_ADE_CW_RS.BGL) and copy it into the following folder:
Flight Simulator X/Addon Scenery/scenery - Place LIRF_ADE_OBJ.BGL into:
Flight Simulator X/Scenery/Global/scenery - To see jetway extensions, browse to your FSX/Scenery/NAME/Texture folder, locate jfk_jetway.dds and jfk_jetway_LM.dds, then copy them into:
FSX/Scenery/Global/Texture
- Note: Only a single LIRF_RS.BGL file should remain in your Addon Scenery/scenery folder at any one time.
- Ensure no other AFCAD file for LIRF is installed by any AI traffic add-on. Duplicate AFCADs can cause unforeseen parking issues and confusion for AI controllers.
- When using ATIS with LIRF_ADE_CW_RS.BGL, you might hear references to non-parallel “fake” runways required for crosswind activation, which can be safely ignored. If this proves distracting, choose LIRF_ADE_RS.BGL instead.
Removing the Files
- Simply delete the introduced .BGL files from their respective folders, and the default airport layout will again become active.
All improvements, including the new gate numbering scheme, updated signage, and the expanded terminal, aim to replicate Fiumicino’s real-world status more accurately. The control tower view even offers a rooftop perspective for tower mode. Ray Smith has meticulously crafted this update to boost realism and accommodate various sizes of aircraft, such as the A380, in a more practical manner.
Enjoy an immersive and practical runway experience at LIRF, and have a comfortable flight around Rome with this carefully assembled freeware package by Ray Smith. Fly responsibly, and be sure to verify correct file placement to experience proper gate assignments and operations.
