Improve your Reno/Tahoe International layout through this freeware AFCAD enhancement tailored specifically for Acceleration-enabled Microsoft Flight Simulator X. This package, created by Ray Smith, introduces refined taxi paths, accurate signage, and two operational runway modes for KRNO in Nevada, USA, while placing the control tower at its real-world location. It also includes extra fuel truck allocations and built-out service roads, providing a more authentic feel when maneuvering around the aerial gateway to Reno.
Key Add-On Features and File Structure
Reno/Tahoe International (KRNO) is a vital airfield in northern Nevada, adjacent to downtown Reno and known for its proximity to the scenic Sierra Nevada. Reflecting this regional significance, Ray Smith’s work includes:
- Fresh Tower Placement: Incorporates the main control tower at its most current on-site position.
- Reworked Parking Assignments: Ensures more accurate airline gate allocations, supplemented by extra spots.
- Optimized Traffic Flow: Up-to-date taxiway designations and signage.
- Ground Support Integration: Additional fuel trucks, along with redefined vehicle routes for ground crews.
Within the download, you will see three BGL files that govern the functionality:
- KRNO_ADE_CW_RS.BGL – Activates crosswind runways to allow simultaneous operation on all three.
- KRNO_ADE_RS.BGL – Mirrors the default usage pattern, with a single primary operational runway.
- KRNO_ADE_OBJ.BGL – Adds the extra objects like the relocated tower and service roads.
Choosing Your Runway Configuration
Crosswind Mode
By selecting the KRNO_ADE_CW_RS.BGL file, you will enable KRNO’s crosswind runway. As a result, all three strips can host departing or arriving flights simultaneously, creating a more dynamic airport environment. Note that when using ATIS, you may hear mention of “fake runways,” a standard method for activating non-parallel surfaces.
Default Operation Mode
If you prefer to keep the runway setup closer to a simplified arrangement, opt for KRNO_ADE_RS.BGL. It delivers the default runway usage while retaining the enhanced textures, parking design, and ground services.
Installation Steps
- Remove or overwrite any older AFCAD modifications for KRNO you may have previously placed in your simulator. Ensure they are not stored anywhere within your Microsoft Flight Simulator X directory.
- Choose one runway BGL file:
- If you want the crosswind option, use KRNO_ADE_CW_RS.BGL.
- If you want the more standard pattern, use KRNO_ADE_RS.BGL.
- Move KRNO_ADE_OBJ.BGL to the “Scenery/Global/scenery” folder within your FSX setup.
- Launch your simulator. The upgraded environment should now load automatically.
Crucial Reminders
- One Configuration Only: You must only keep one of the runway-operation BGLs active in the Addon Scenery/scenery directory to prevent conflicts or incorrect parking setups.
- AI Traffic Compatibility: If you use any custom traffic utilities, ensure they do not install a separate AFCAD for KRNO. This measure avoids potential duplication or overlap.
Removing This Modification
- Simply delete or move the KRNO_ADE_CW_RS.BGL, KRNO_ADE_RS.BGL, and KRNO_ADE_OBJ.BGL files out of your simulator’s folders.
- Your Microsoft Flight Simulator X setup will revert to the default airport layout upon your next session.
Many thanks go to Ray Smith for developing this comprehensive AFCAD resource, which remains an excellent choice for simmers aiming to enhance Reno/Tahoe International within Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Use it to enjoy expanded realism and a more engaging experience when navigating KRNO’s runways and taxiways. Safe flying!
