The Delta Airlines MD-11 “Centennial Spirit” presented here is a complete freeware aircraft package for FS2004. It comes fully equipped with animated control surfaces, flaps, flaperons, wing views, and an accurate lighting configuration. In addition, the exterior paint makes use of distinctive reflective techniques to enhance realism. Developed by iFDG (international Flightsim Design Group) and featuring a specialized livery by Alex Siu, this mod captures the essence of an iconic wide-cabin trijet in Delta’s commemorative markings.

Highlighting the Centennial Spirit Colors

Delta’s “Centennial Spirit” paint job stands out by combining the standard airline color scheme with unique celebratory details. This rendition precisely blends vintage design elements and modern styling to evoke the historical significance behind the airline’s milestones. The reflective textures emphasized in the fuselage and tail surfaces bring these markings to life under various lighting conditions.

Exploring MD-11 Design and Background

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is a long-range, wide-body trijet with a flight deck that integrates comprehensive digital instrumentation. It was produced in Long Beach, California, originally by McDonnell Douglas, and later under Boeing. Thanks to aerodynamic improvements such as advanced winglets and an extended tail cone, the MD-11 achieves greater fuel efficiency than its earlier DC-10 predecessor. This design also incorporates a smaller horizontal stabilizer with integrated fuel capacity, reducing drag and enhancing range capabilities.

Passenger and Freight Configurations

Although this add-on mainly captures the passenger variant, the real MD-11 series included dedicated freighter and combi options. Those variants allowed airlines to carry both passengers and freight on the main deck, supported by spacious cargo holds beneath. Depending on cabin layout, seating spans from 285 seats in a multi-class arrangement to over 400 seats for all-economy use cases.

Performance and Extended Range Details

Equipped with a maximum takeoff weight of 602,500 pounds (273,290 kg) in its standard form, the MD-11 can fly approximately 7,630 statute miles (12,270 km). An optional extended-range (ER) configuration enables a higher maximum takeoff weight of 630,500 pounds (285,990 kg) and pushes the range to around 8,225 statute miles (13,230 km). Three powerplant solutions—General Electric CF6-80C2, Pratt & Whitney 4460, and Pratt & Whitney 4462—provide operators with versatile thrust levels and efficiency.

Avionics Suite and Automated Systems

The cockpit environment reflects modernized technology, featuring:

CRT Displays
Six integrated cathode ray tube screens delivering flight data, engine parameters, and navigation information.
Dual Flight Management System
Enables optimized waypoint navigation and fuel usage.
Computerized System Controllers
Handles both normal and emergency checklists without requiring a flight engineer.

This high level of automation significantly reduces pilot workload, reflecting the MD-11’s next-generation approach to commercial aviation operations.

Features Within the Simulator

Users will discover substantial detail throughout the simulation experience. iFDG’s attention to flight dynamics extends to precise handling, making it suitable for long-range flights. The model also incorporates:

  • Authentic reflections and specular highlights for metallic surfaces
  • Realistic flaps, flaperons, and control surfaces for smooth maneuvering
  • Accurate wing views and external animations for added immersion

Installation Procedure

To install this freeware package in FS2004:

  1. Extract the included files into your “Aircraft” folder within the main Flight Simulator directory.
  2. Move the effects files to the Flight Simulator “EFFECTS” folder if required.
  3. Press the “I” key to enable certain special effects as indicated.
