FS2002 Spirit Airline McDonnell Douglas MD-80 (old livery)

Spirit Airlines’ classic McDonnell Douglas MD-80 in its older livery brings a period-correct look to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002, built on the FFX/SGA model. Crisp 32-bit textures, subtle reflections, and convincing engine exhaust effects sharpen the exterior and add atmosphere from taxi to climb, cruise, and approach.

This freeware release delivers an authentic McDonnell Douglas MD-80 rendition in the historic Spirit Airline paint scheme, tailored specifically for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002. It incorporates refined visual elements, such as 32-bit textures and reflective effects, while also featuring realistic engine exhaust, plus other immersion-enhancing details that add depth to any virtual flight.

Visual Refinements and Enhanced Exterior

The included aircraft model, created by FFX/SGA, showcases an aerodynamically precise fuselage and a T-tail design that accurately reflects the classic MD-80 family. Its painting, carried out by Massimo Grassi, implements high-resolution textures (32-bit) and polished reflections, which highlight the metallic surfaces and bring out the aging design elements of Spirit’s earlier branding. Meanwhile, subtle smoke and jet exhaust visuals improve the sense of realism throughout your climb, cruise, and descent phases.

Operational Notes

  • Complete Package: Everything required is included for an out-of-the-box experience, with a ready-to-fly freeware base model. Simply place the files into your simulator’s aircraft directory.
  • Performance Integration: The MD-80’s twin rear-mounted engines deliver characteristic thrust and sound modeling, ensuring pilot immersion during takeoff, cruise, and approach phases.
  • Legacy Spirit Livery: Reflects the airline’s older appearance before more recent branding changes, adding historical interest to your simulator sessions.

Aircraft Context

The MD-80 series is well-known for its efficient airframe and distinctive tail section, which was popular in the mid-range market. It became a workhorse for many operators, including Spirit Airlines, where it carried travelers on short to medium-haul routes. Enthusiasts appreciate its powerful engines, streamlined nose, and builder-specific cockpit layout.

How to install this mod

flight simulator livery / repaint
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Identify the target folder

Different simulators use different folder structures. Check the readme to confirm where files should be placed.
  3. Copy files to the correct location

Drag the extracted folder into the location the readme specifies. Most add-ons just need to be in the right folder.
  4. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.

you did a great job. do you think you could make the MD-80 made by boeing? it's an NPC plane for flightsim 2002.
