This package provides specialized texture files for integrating a Trans World Airlines (TWA) Douglas DC-9-41 livery into Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. It is exclusively a repaint designed for the freeware Douglas DC-9 model produced by SGA. It does not include the base package, which needs to be separately obtained from Fly Away Simulation’s library. Created by developer Frank Idone, this repaint highlights the visual details of TWA’s classic passenger operations and reflects the era when shorter field performance was paramount.

Installation Procedure and Configuration

After downloading, extract all texture files into the designated “aircraft” directory within your main simulator folder. The following addition should be made (or appended) to your existing aircraft.cfg file to successfully register the new paint scheme:

description=DC-9 no.762 flown by Trans World Airlines.\nLivery by Frank Idone.\n\nThe DC-9 was designed specifically to operate from short runways and on short- to medium-range routes so that the speed, comfort and reliability of jet transportation could be extended to hundreds of communities previously served only by propeller-driven airliners.\nSeries 40: To again meet airline demands for a DC-9 with more capacity, the Series 40 was developed with a fuselage length of 125.6 feet (38.3 m). Seating is available for up to 125 passengers, 10 more than the popular Series 30s. Below-floor cargo space totals 1,019 cubic feet (28.8 m3). The Series 40 uses the same wing as the Series 30. Series 40 engines are JT8D-9s, JT8D-11s or JT8D-15s. The model entered service in March 1968.

Notable Repaint Details

This rendition showcases TWA’s trademark fuselage markings and tail insignia from a period when the airline was expanding domestic jet routes. The paint job aligns with Trans World Airlines’ frequent use of the DC-9 family for its short- to medium-range flights. Expect faithful panel lines and weathering to match real-world operational wear.

About the DC-9-41 Variant

The DC-9 Series 40, commonly referred to by its specific sub-model number (DC-9-41 in this case), features an extended fuselage spanning about 125.6 feet (38.3 m). This lengthening provides seating for roughly 125 passengers. The aircraft relies on Pratt & Whitney JT8D turbofan engines, known for reliable thrust and efficient operations on shorter runways. Below-deck cargo areas give it a substantial capacity of about 1,019 cubic feet (28.8 m³), making it versatile for both passenger luggage and light freight transport. Although retaining the same wing design as earlier DC-9s, the Series 40 engines grant it more power options, aligning with real-world airline requirements for performance and economic operation.

Historical Angle on TWA

Trans World Airlines was a major U.S. carrier that linked numerous domestic and international cities. The TWA fleet of DC-9s accommodated routes where runway length was restrictive, ensuring solid dispatch reliability. This repaint channels that era, granting one more layer of authenticity to your SGA DC-9 platform in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.
