This set of textures recreates a 1950s Japanese Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) finish for the freeware Curtiss C-46A Commando designed by Libardo Guzman and CalClassic (file name: C46GA.ZIP). This repaint, meticulously crafted by Manuele Villa, depicts a historical scheme reflecting mid-century transport operations within the JASDF’s growing fleet. Although intended for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, it follows the original aircraft’s real-world performance characteristics. The base package is not provided here, so be sure to locate and download the Curtiss C-46A Commando model in the Fly Away Simulation library before proceeding.
Highlighting the Commando’s Notable Features
The Curtiss C-46A Commando served as a robust twin-engine transport aircraft. Recognized for its large carrying capacity, it was widely employed as a cargo and troop transport platform during the mid-20th century. Its pressurized cabin—a distinguishing feature for the era—contributed to its operational success, making it an ideal workhorse under various mission profiles. Over time, it found a place with different air forces, including the JASDF, due to its reliability and adaptability in multiple settings.
Authentic JASDF Livery
This repaint draws inspiration from JASDF markings that were active throughout the 1950s. The texture covers exterior details such as fuselage insignia and wing designations, staying true to the period’s identification standards. Enthusiasts who appreciate historical liveries will notice subtle panel shading, weathering effects, and refined markings that align with archival references from that timeframe.

File Arrangement and Setup
- Extract the folder named texture.JAF and move it into your GA_C-46-11 directory located under “Flight Simulator 9/AIRCRAFT/.”
- Open the Base texture folder (provided with the original download) and copy all items into the newly placed texture.JAF folder. Ensure that you do not overwrite existing files inside texture.JAF.
Aircraft Configuration
After adding the textures, you will need to include an additional entry in your AIRCRAFT.CFG file. First, make a backup of this configuration file if you wish to easily revert later. Then, open it with a text editor and insert the following details after the last existing [flightsim.XX]
block, making sure to adjust the sequence number accordingly:
[fltsim.7]

- Finally, save your edits to AIRCRAFT.CFG and exit the text editor.
Additional Notes on the Model
The base package by Libardo Guzman and CalClassic faithfully simulates the Commando’s flight dynamics: from its characteristic wing lift profile down to the twin radial engine performance. Pairing this historically accurate JASDF texture with the well-modeled C-46A will create an immersive cargo or troop transport experience suitable for mid-20th-century scenarios in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.
