This freeware repaint offers a detailed Finnish Air Force livery for the payware Douglas DC-2 package. It is designed for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 but can be integrated into Microsoft Flight Simulator X with an additional file for Service Pack 2 users. Created by Tim Scharnhop, this repaint is based on the original textures developed by Gerard Kranenbarg and Jan Visser, ensuring a historically accurate rendition of the “DO-1” airframe. The Finnish military initially acquired this DC-2 thanks to Count von Rosen’s donation in early 1940, and it eventually received camouflage updates in 1942 while serving under the personal transport requirements of Marshal Mannerheim.

A Look at the Distinctive Finnish DC-2 DO-1

The Douglas DC-2 was an influential twin-engine aircraft in the 1930s, prized for its reliability and performance. In this specific repaint, the fuselage and wings display the unique Finnish Air Force markings applied around mid-January 1940. Later additions included a protective coating and the official “DO-1” designation. Pilots in the Finnish Air Force used this adaptable airframe for various tasks, including staff transit and high-profile flights.

Installing the Repaint Files

Follow these instructions carefully to make the new livery operational. The repaint comes as a texture folder, and it does not include the payware model itself. Verify that you have the required base DC-2 package ready in your aircraft directory before proceeding.

  • Extract the Package: Unzip the dc2_finaf2.ZIP archive into any temporary folder, ensuring the integrity of all contained directories.
  • Relocate the Texture Folder: Copy the folder named texture.finaf1 directly into the Douglas DC2 folder inside Flight Simulator 9/AIRCRAFT/ or Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes.
  • Modify the aircraft.cfg: Open this configuration file in a text editor of your choice.
  • Insert the Required Entry: Under the last [fltsim.XX] line, paste the following segment and make sure to adjust the sequence number to match the current series of entires:

description=DC-2-115E (MSN 1354), as it appeared after it was donated by Count von Rosen to the Finnish Air Force in mid-January 1940. Later the aircraft was used by the Air Force Staff and among others as the personal transport of Marshal Mannerheim. A protective camouflage was applied in March 1942 and the aeroplane was re-numbered DO-1.\nFS9 Flight Dynamics: Tom Falley\nModel: Alexander Schreijnders, Jan Visser\nLivery: Tim Scharnhop, Gerard Kranenbarg, Jan Visser\nPanel, VC, Interior: Rob Cappers, Jan Visser\nGauges: XML Programming: HansJoerg Naegele, Gauge bitmaps: Rob Cappers

  • Save Your Changes: Once saved, the Finnish Air Force variant will appear in your simulator’s aircraft selection.

Compatibility with FSX Service Pack 2

For users who have installed FSX Service Pack 2, there is one important step:

  • Open the dc2_fsx-sp2.zip file and move the included A_spinprop.bmp into the texture.finaf1 folder.

That final substitution ensures spinning propeller textures display properly in newer builds of Microsoft Flight Simulator X. After this, you can load up your simulator and experience the DC-2 wearing the historically significant Finnish Air Force “DO-1” look.
