Experience a classic piece of aviation history in your simulator with this freeware Austrian Government Douglas DC-2 A-500 repaint. Created by Tim Scharnhop, using foundational textures from Gerard Kranenbarg and Jan Visser, this visual upgrade brings the venerable DC-2 into an Austrian Government livery. Designed for use in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 or Microsoft Flight Simulator X, this repaint highlights the elegance of the DC-2’s 1930s construction, its two-engine design, and its enduring performance capabilities. Please note that the freeware base DC-2 package from the “Uiver” Team is required to access this livery, and you can find that model within the Fly Away Simulation file library.

Historical Insight

The Douglas DC-2 made its initial mark in aviation during the mid-1930s. It was one of the earliest all-metal aircraft to deliver robust flight dynamics and an innovative aerodynamic profile. The Austrian Government variant, designated A-500, continued to represent a crucial step forward in fast, comfortable air travel. Its proven reliability, along with the DC-2’s capacity and twin-prop layout, made it a favorite for governmental flight operations.

Livery Integration

This texture set adapts a historically accurate color scheme reflecting the Austrian Government’s ownership, delivered around 1934. The repaint faithfully represents the specific markings and aesthetic unique to that official aircraft. Specialized artwork by the team leverages historically referenced designs to immerse sim pilots in the golden age of civil and executive aviation.

Installation Instructions

  1. Extract dc2_austria.ZIP to a temporary location, ensuring that folder structures remain intact.
  2. Copy the newly unzipped texture.austria folder into your Douglas DC2 directory found in either the Flight Simulator 9/AIRCRAFT/ folder or the Microsoft Flight Simulator X/SimObjects/Airplanes folder, depending on which platform you use.
  3. Open the aircraft.cfg file in a plain-text editor. Under the final [fltsim.XX] entry, paste the following block, adjusting the numbering sequence as required:
