FSX Manual/Checklist NATS Douglas R4D-6

NATS Douglas R4D-6 procedures come alive with a thorough PDF manual and checklist that walks sim pilots from a cold-and-dark virtual cockpit through engine start, taxi, takeoff, cruise power settings, approach, shutdown, and securing. Built for Microsoft Flight Simulator X, it also supports Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 workflows with altitude-aware guidance.

Flight Simulator X Prepar3D

This comprehensive PDF booklet outlines a detailed sequence for operating the NATS Douglas R4D-6 from initial cold and dark conditions to final shutdown in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It covers every major phase of flight, including engine start, taxi procedures, takeoff, climb, in-flight settings, approach, and securing the aircraft on the ramp. It was originally developed for a payware package designed by the MAAM-Sim team, credited to Bill Rambow, Jan Visser, Fred Banting, Rob Young, Bill Womack, and Howard Sodja. Created by Werner Schott, the earlier versions tailored for FS2002 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 achieved more than 6000 downloads prior to this adaptation.

In-Depth Operational Reference for the R4D-6

The R4D-6 variant shares much of its lineage with the famed DC-3, valued for its versatility and reliability. This PDF reference uses a booklet format to guide sim pilots through every procedure, ensuring proper handling for each segment of the flight. It starts with a completely powered-down cockpit environment, often referred to as cold and dark, and continues through startup, taxi, takeoff, cruise, approach, and terminal checklists.

Key Features of the Booklet

  • Phased Checklists: Step-by-step instructions take you from the “cold” cockpit setup to final engine shutdown and airframe security.
  • Flight Power Settings: Manifold pressure values are supplied for various flight segments, helping regulate torque and engine performance.
  • Altitude Considerations: Recognizes that controls and indicated power settings can shift above 2500 ft MSL, making it easier to adjust for higher airfields.
  • Realistic Workflow: Encourages saving a flight once parking procedures are done so you can regularly load a realistically powered-down aircraft.

Intended Usage Within the Simulator

Although many virtual pilots begin flights with engines running and avionics configured, this reference assumes a completely powered-down cockpit. If you typically start in a ready-to-go state, position the aircraft at a gate or parking spot, then apply checklists from the Taxi to ramp stage onward until Shutdown and Securing sections are completed. Once the aircraft is fully powered down, save that scenario, and you will have a reliable foundation for reenacting a realistic startup each time.

Authorship and Acknowledgments

Thanks are due to the MAAM-Sim team—Bill Rambow, Jan Visser, Fred Banting, Rob Young, Bill Womack, and Howard Sodja—for developing the payware Douglas R4D-6 platform. Additionally, recognition goes to Werner Schott, who compiled and authored this manual/checklist based on the original payware add-on. This guide seamlessly adapts the real-world operating procedures into a simulator context, delivering a valuable resource for both enthusiasts and serious flight simulation users.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D add-on
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place files per the readme

Most FSX add-ons go into one of: SimObjects\Airplanes\, Addon Scenery\, Effects\, or Gauges\.
  3. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
