This freeware repaint offers a vivid yellow-over-blue theme for the default Cessna 172 in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Created by Chris Tuinstra, this fictitious private livery stands out with its distinctive color contrast and polished shine. It does not include the base model; you will need to download the freeware default Cessna 172 separately from the Fly Away Simulation library. Below, you will find an explanation of the technical elements of this repaint and how to install it without overwriting any important configuration data.
Showcasing the Airframe
The Cessna 172, known as a four-seat, single-engine design, has gained cult status within the flight simulation community. Since its introduction over half a century ago, it has proven to be a reliable training option for aspiring pilots worldwide. This repaint preserves the standard flight characteristics but adds a refreshed exterior, emphasizing dynamic shine. Many flight schools rely on this modern tricycle-gear platform, which has earned a reputation for solid handling and straightforward avionics.
Color and Contrast Details
The livery demonstrates a high-contrast approach by layering a bold yellow upper surface over a deep blue underside. The paintwork enhances any exterior inspection using default sim lighting, creating an appearance that reflects the real-world crispness of modern paint finishes. Sim pilots who prefer vibrant aircraft liveries can now enjoy this fresh take on a trusted general aviation favorite.

Important Notes Before Installation
This repaint only utilizes default files in FSX, so no additional items are required beyond your original aircraft. However, it is always wise to back up the aircraft.cfg file in your C172
folder to safeguard any previous custom modifications. This procedure ensures you can revert to your old settings if needed.
Quick Installation Pathways
There are two distinct approaches to installing this texture:
Method A (Overwriting Unmodified Files)
- Copy the
texture.
folder and the enclosedaircraft.cfg
directly into your default aircraft directory, for example:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\C172
- Use this approach only if you are certain your current
aircraft.cfg
has not been altered in any way.
Method B (Editing a Modified Aircraft Configuration)
- Transfer the
texture.
folder to:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\C172
- Open the aircraft.cfg file in a text editor. Insert the following entry (supplementing the next available
[fltsim.X]
index):
[fltsim.XX]

description="A stable and trustworthy plane, most pilots have logged at least a few hours in a Cessna 172, since it's the most widely available aircraft in the rental fleet, and is used by most flight schools. Since the first prototype was completed in 1955, more than 35,000 C172s have been produced, making it the world's most popular single-engine plane. One of Cessna's first tricycle-gear airplanes, the 172 quickly became the favorite of a growing class of business pilots. Its reliability and easy handling (along with thoughtful engineering and structural updates) have ensured its continued popularity for decades."
- Replace
XX
above with the next consecutive index number in your file. - Save the file when finished, then restart your simulator. You should see the new textures ready for flight.
