This repaint depicts the Royal Danish Air Force markings carried by Armstrong-Whitworth Meteor NF11 aircraft number 508 (c/n AW5549), later converted for target towing. Created by Peter Watkins for Rob Richardson’s freeware Armstrong-Whitworth Meteor NF11, it reproduces the distinctive post-war Danish livery used around December 1952 and carefully reflects the modifications made for Mark TT20 usage under a Swedish target-towing contractor. This package only includes the repaint; the base model is required and can be located in the Fly Away Simulation library. It is fully compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator X as well as Lockheed Martin’s Prepar3D.

Unique Design Attributes and Operational Background

The Meteor NF11 series served as a transitional night-fighter platform, filling gaps while more specialized designs were still in development. Although it originated from the T.7 trainer lineage, this variant adopted the tail structures of the F.8 and the extended F.3 wingspan. The Royal Danish Air Force accepted number 508 in 1952, and it ultimately joined a small fleet of six airframes reconfigured as TT20 target tugs. This role involved accommodating specialized tow-release equipment and cockpit instrumentation to handle aerial target training duties. Today, you may find this airframe preserved in a French aviation museum, reflecting its fascinating multi-national service record.

Essential Replication Details

This livery meticulously recreates the paintwork and markings seen during its target-towing tenure. From the precise Danish insignia placement to the recognition stripes specific to the TT20 configuration, every detail is captured in high fidelity. By combining accurate colors with refined exterior textures, the repaint brings out historically correct nuances such as the repositioning of 20 mm cannons to the wings—necessary due to the enlarged nose housing the AI Mk.10 (SCR-720) radar system.

Installation Steps for the Repaint

  • Place the included texture folder inside your “Armstrong Whitworth Meteor NF11” directory, which resides under the “Airplanes” section of your simulator’s SimObjects directory.
  • Edit your aircraft configuration file to add the following entry, making sure to adjust “xx” to the next available fltsim number.

description=As a night fighter, the Meteor again replaced the Mosquito however it was never more than an interim measure. The Mosquito night fighter had remained in use even though it was largely obsolete. Gloster proposed a night fighter design to meet the Air Ministry specification for the Mosquito replacement, based on the two seater trainer, with the pilot in the front seat and the navigator in the rear. Once accepted however, the work passed to Armstrong Whitworth for both the detail design and production; the first prototype flew on 31 May 1950. Although based on the T.7 twin seater, it used the fuselage and tail of the F.8, and the longer wings of the F.3. An extended nose contained the AI Mk 10 (the 1940s Westinghouse SCR-720) Air Intercept radar. As a consequence the 20 mm cannons were moved into the wings, outboard of the engines. A ventral fuel tank and wing mounted drop tanks completed the Armstrong Whitworth Meteor NF.11.

Additional Notes

Be sure to locate and install Rob Richardson’s freeware Armstrong-Whitworth Meteor NF11 base package from the Fly Away Simulation repository prior to using this repaint. Once set up, you will experience a historically representative Danish scheme that highlights critical transitional features of this post-war jet night fighter.
