McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II USMC brings authentic STOVL operations to X-Plane 11, with thrust-vector nozzle control tuned for confident hovering, short-field departures, and tight approach work. Updated textures, refined aerodynamics, and modern datarefs preserve the classic external model and a practical virtual cockpit built for managing vertical transitions and tactical flying.
Explore the dynamic operational capabilities of the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II USMC in this carefully adapted freeware release designed for X-Plane 11. This package brings the legendary short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) concept to virtual pilots who appreciate precise handling and tactical versatility. Thanks to the efforts of the original developers, this formerly default model from X-Plane versions 8 through 10 has been enhanced and made compatible with more recent simulator technology.
This Harrier II offers a distinctive vertical/short takeoff and landing profile, which is integral for United States Marine Corps operations (abbreviated as USMC). The real-world AV-8B’s turbofan powerplant directs thrust vectoring through rotary exhaust nozzles, enabling the aircraft to maneuver in environments without traditional runways. In X-Plane 11, you can replicate these specialized procedures thanks to an accurate flight model and refined aerodynamic calculations.
Within this release, developers have preserved the authentic external structure and cockpit layout. The interior offers an ergonomic pilot interface, which illustrates crucial readouts and indicators for managing hover transitions. Refinements introduced for the newer simulator environment include augmented textures for enhanced realism, improved control responses for vertical and short-field operations, and updated data references that align with X-Plane 11’s avionics framework.
This aircraft served as a default inclusion in older X-Plane software iterations, specifically from Version 8 up to Version 10. Now, this same model is reintroduced for modern audiences, maintaining all the functionality that made it popular among legacy sim flyers. The collaboration that enabled this freeware revival was made possible by Laminar Research (providing permission to share), and project development was originally spearheaded by Austin Meyer, Anthony Booher, and JRollon Planes. Subsequent X-Plane 11 updating and compatibility work was performed by Sean McLeod (Aerostarsim), ensuring the aircraft integrates correctly with the newer flight engine.
The vertical-lift system is simulated to reflect realistic nozzle angles and thrust balances, which is critical for practicing hovering or short-field takeoffs. Flight sim enthusiasts can subject the model to advanced flight scenarios, such as carrier landings or constrained runway environments, to fully embrace the Harrier II’s distinct performance envelope. Engine power and nozzle indexing require close coordination, rewarding those who master delicate power transitions with stable hover and smooth landing cycles.
Not for resale, this freeware product remains the property of the original authors. No modifications are permitted without prior consent, aside from adjustments essential for simulator compatibility. The entire project exists to celebrate the engineering prowess of the Harrier design while bringing accessible simulation to those eager to expand their X-Plane 11 fleet.

Seems not to have a 3D cockpit. The only view control I could find was with the up/down arrow keys. I managed to figure out the thrust/vector controls and flew it around the Bay Area, but never managed to get the plan in trim.
Thrust controls are Vector Forward to increase forwards thrust and Vector Backwards to decrease forward thrust. I have them assigned to the hat switch and it flies fine.
Big question....how do you control the dam thing. Can fine no information on settings?
