This freeware repaint introduces a detailed US Navy (VA-176) paint scheme for Tim Conrad's A-1J Skyrider in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It is crafted by Henry William and reflects the iconic naval markings of one of the most famous carrier-capable, prop-driven attack aircraft. Since only textures are provided, obtain the base A-1J_SKYRAIDER.ZIP model by Tim Conrad from the Fly Away Simulation library before proceeding.

Classic Attack Aircraft Background

The Douglas A-1 Skyrider, sometimes referred to as the “Spad” (in reference to its long service life and sturdy build), is a single-seat attack platform known for its robust radial engine and exceptional payload capacity. Initially designed for the US Navy, it saw extensive carrier-based operations and later served in close air support (CSAR) roles. While many newer jets overshadowed it, the A-1 proved invaluable across varied theaters of operation.

Distinctive Naval Paint Details

This repaint utilizes historically inspired insignia from VA-176, highlighting the late-era US Navy tactical markings. You will see carefully replicated squadron logos on the fuselage as well as authentic stenciling and lettering. The weathered detailing enhances immersion, particularly when performing carrier-capable flight maneuvers and low-level strike missions.

Key Repaint Elements

  • Accurate color palette matching US Navy operational squadrons.
  • Unique squadron identifier “409” applied on tail surfaces and fuselage.
  • Subtle wear effects to match the historical Skyrider appearances.

Steps for Installation

  1. Unpack the downloaded repaint archive to a convenient folder on your system.
  2. Locate Tim Conrad’s A-1J main directory (often found in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\A-1J).
  3. Copy the texture.409 folder from your extracted files into the A-1J aircraft folder.
  4. Open aircraft.cfg in a text editor. Append the following code block, substituting “xx” with your next sequential [fltsim] entry:

Finalizing the Repaint

After saving your changes in the configuration file, boot up Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Select the Douglas A-1J in your aircraft library and look for the VA-176 livery labeled “U.S Navy 409.” This update from Henry William should display rich US Navy markings, suitably honoring the storied history of this venerable attack plane.

Note: Because this release only includes custom liveries, remember to install Tim Conrad’s A-1J base model, available as freeware in the Fly Away Simulation archive. Enjoy the enhanced naval experience and explore carrier-based missions with added realism.
