The German Air Force Eurofighter is a highly maneuverable, twin-engine fighter known for its remarkable performance in both air defense and ground attack operations. Created by A. Meyer and offered as freeware, this complete package incorporates a fully realized model, detailed textures, custom sounds, and an authentic flight deck. It is compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator X and also supports Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. This specialized release depicts Luftwaffe Fighter Wing 73 markings and includes several unique features that replicate genuine systems found on the real Typhoon platform.

Distinctive Aerodynamic Characteristics

The Eurofighter’s overall aerodynamic form comprises a canard-delta configuration, engineered for exceptional control in subsonic and supersonic ranges. This arrangement seeks to optimize:

  • Rapid and sustained turn performance
  • Enhanced agility and lift, favoring STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing)
  • Streamlined drag reduction
  • Powerful acceleration with high thrust-to-weight

Its fundamental design also integrates stealth-enhancing elements, such as reduced frontal radar cross-section and passive sensor strategies. Meanwhile, a robust materials selection of carbon-fiber composites, advanced alloys, titanium, and glass-reinforced plastics helps minimize airframe mass while preserving structural strength.

The Typhoon’s minimal takeoff and landing distances (under 700 m and 600 m, respectively) allow for flexible deployment, while thrust peaks at 2 × 70 kN, or up to 2 × 90 kN with afterburners engaged. Pilots can expect a maximum speed near Mach 2 and operational g-load tolerances in the +9/?3 range.

Twin EJ200 Engines

This combat jet sports a pair of EJ200 turbofans, which bolster reliability under combat and peacetime tasks. The EJ200’s advanced turbine technology is characterized by modular construction, straightforward maintenance, and minimized support tooling, all of which contribute to extended component lifespans and cost-effective operations.

Offensive and Defensive Loadouts

The Eurofighter carries a 27 mm Mauser BK-27 cannon for close-in engagements. Externally, there are 13 hardpoints supporting extensive air-to-air and air-to-ground munitions, including:

  • AIM-9 Sidewinder, ASRAAM, AIM-120 AMRAAM, IRIS-T (with potential for Meteor integration)
  • Storm Shadow/Scalp EG, AGM-84 Harpoon, and other precision-guided missiles
  • Varieties of Paveway, JDAM, and laser-guided bombs

Sensor pods such as Litening expand the Eurofighter’s targeting capabilities, while advanced defensive avionics safeguard against incoming threats.

Extended Feature Set

In this freeware release by A. Meyer, multiple enhancements and mission scenarios exist for both Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. Noteworthy highlights include:

  • Formation-flight model featuring up to three Eurofighters
  • Missions with single-seat variants equipped with IRIS-T, Meteor, and other ordnance
  • Trainerversion support with three external fuel tanks
  • A MAN towing vehicle and numerous realistic animations
  • Auto-trim flight model emulating the real-life canard mechanisms

The flight dynamics are carefully calibrated to reflect the combined 35,000+ horsepower output of the EJ200 engines. Two distinct sound packs are also provided to address different operational conditions. In total, 35 specialized flight models come bundled with this download.

Exterior and Lighting Details

Mechanically, the model features detailed landing gear, canopy, radome, and aerial refueling probe. Users can toggle lights such as strobes, navigation beams, beacons, taxi lamps, and formation illuminations. Additional visual effects—afterburner flames, exhaust trails, and functional reflective surfaces—augment the in-sim immersion.

Liveries and Repaints

Among several included repaints are German Fighter Wing 73 “Steinhoff,” Fighter Wing 74, and special commemorative schemes celebrating 50 years of JG 73 and five years of Eurofighter service. Royal Air Force variants include 3, 11, 17, and 29 Squadrons. The Italian, Spanish, Austrian, and Saudi Arabian units also appear, alongside certain prototypes.

Avionics and Cockpit Systems

The virtual cockpit replicates the real Eurofighter interface with three multifunction displays (MFDs) covering everything from primary flight data to radar scans. Pilots can configure tail hooks, drogue refueling, lighting controls, frequency selection, and autopilot modes directly through these pages. The HUD dynamically adjusts to show flight path vector, compass graphics, climb rates, and wind metrics.

MFD Pages and Sensors

  • HSI Page with two VOR and one ADF capability
  • Map, GPS, and departure/arrival displays
  • FLIR sensor output (PIRATE) for night or low-visibility operations
  • Captor radar simulation with scanning modes
  • Defensive Aids Sub System (DASS) for threat detection

Installation Process

  1. Extract the entire packaged file to a temporary folder.
  2. Run the “EFeedemo.exe” file and follow the on-screen install instructions.

DirectX 10 users note: It is necessary to disable the DirectX 10 preview within Microsoft Flight Simulator X for optimal visual rendering of this model. Begin your simulator, select “Options > Settings > Display,” and under “Graphics,” uncheck the DirectX 10 preview feature. Then restart Microsoft Flight Simulator X to load without DX10 active.

Short Reference for Custom Animations

  • Formation Changes: F5–F8
  • Drag Chute (touchdown only): #
  • Extend/Withdraw Refueling Hose: Ctrl+W
  • Opening Canopy/Radome: Shift+E

The freeware addon is credited to A. Meyer, Germany (2009). All visual models, panels, sounds, textures, gauges, and animations are his original work. Feel free to configure the various loadouts and explore the included missions to fully appreciate the agility and accuracy this Eurofighter rendition brings to your flight simulator.
