Enhance your naval presence within Microsoft Flight Simulator X by adding these versatile Leander Class Frigates, offered entirely as freeware. Three distinct variants are supplied to serve as standalone or AI-controlled escort vessels, each supporting helicopter operations and fitted with realistic visual and smoke effects. Developed by Mike Hudson, they introduce detailed post-war Royal Navy frigates that can complement your existing carrier fleets.
Features and Design Choices
These warships were built to expand the maritime aspect of your simulation world. They maintain a helicopter-capable deck, making them ideal for rotorcraft takeoff and landing within a carrier task force. Given the real-world practice of carriers rarely sailing alone, these Leander Class vessels will fill a crucial role. Although not intended to be authoritative replicas, they reflect easily recognizable silhouettes, weapon loadouts, and era-specific layouts.
Three Separate Configurations
- HMS Euryalus (F15)
Displays the Batch 1B fit with the 4.5-inch twin turret, Limbo launcher, plus two 40mm Bofors guns. - HMS Leander (F109)
Modeled as a Batch 1A vessel converted to incorporate the Ikara anti-submarine system, Sea Cat launchers, and the Limbo weapon. - HMS Andromeda (F57)
Showcases the Batch 3 refit, which replaced certain armaments with Exocet launchers and Sea Wolf missile systems. The aft deck was lengthened to accommodate operations with the Westland Lynx.
Integration within the Simulator
Each frigate is compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator X Acceleration/SP2. Every model is distributed in two formats: one with wake effects for those who prefer a dynamic oceanic environment, and one without wakes for a more optimized experience. Additionally, authentic running lights are present but are limited by the typical aircraft navigation light range, offering nighttime visibility without creating excessive bloom.
AI or Static Deployment
You may place these ships as static objects in custom harbor sceneries or deploy them as AI traffic to accompany your aircraft carrier. The included files allow easy placement through standard scenery methods. Instructions, found in the respective folders, outline how to integrate them seamlessly into your simulator’s environment.
Technical Background
Mike Hudson modeled, tested, and compiled these frigates using FSDS 3.5.1 (Abacus) and the Microsoft Flight Simulator X Acceleration/SP2 SDK. The static bgl
uses Library Creator XML courtesy of Arno Gerretsen, while texture work employs DXTBmp by Martin Wright. These assets have been optimized exclusively for FSX Acceleration/SP2 under Windows XP testing conditions, though they may function under later Windows versions.
Historical Note
While these ships take inspiration from the most numerous post-war Royal Navy frigate class, variations in refitting schedules and photographic references mean they may not precisely match any single vessel. If you possess in-depth knowledge of the Leander Class or served on these frigates, keep in mind that the creator chose to prioritize functionality and standardized modeling over minute historical detailing.
Usage and Redistribution
This freeware package resides under the original creator’s copyright and may not be used commercially or hosted on platforms that require payment. If you plan to incorporate these models into your own scenery releases with no commercial gain, you have permission to do so provided proper credit is given and the included models remain unchanged. Repaints are welcome, but please release only the modified textures—do not bundle the entire original frigate model. The developer appreciates a courtesy copy if you create alternative liveries.
All elements are supplied as-is, with no responsibility taken for any impact on your system. By installing or using these files, you accept that any risk involved lies solely with you.
