Flight simulation fans seeking a refined military airbase environment will appreciate this freeware enhancement by Jim Cook. It revamps Shaw AFB (KSSC) in Sumter, South Carolina, while keeping performance in mind. The update introduces meticulously placed structures, updated parking layouts, and additional objects to make this Air Force installation far more engaging than the default version.

Enhanced Airbase Layout

This package transforms the default setting by placing additional Military_Combat and Military_Cargo parking spots. These specialized positions (used for organizing various aircraft types) ensure that your AI flights and personal operations feel more accurate. Exhaustive taxiway alignment and apron adjustments enhance fluid movement around the station, especially when maneuvering larger aircraft.

Refined Structures and Facilities

Jim Cook relocated vital buildings, added extra hangars, and included a fire station equipped with fire trucks. He also integrated static fuel trucks, which lend authenticity to ground support operations. Moreover, a number of light poles, vehicle-filled parking areas, and well-placed static aircraft offer a sense of everyday base activity.

Real-World Inspiration

Shaw AFB is recognized for hosting notable fighter squadrons and fostering advanced tactical readiness. This reworked version reflects real-world references, using AirNav diagrams and Google Earth data to achieve precision. Sumter’s warm climate and ample open space have been faithfully captured by repositioning various objects throughout the base.

Compatibility and Additional Recommendations

Although nothing beyond FSX stock elements is required, Jim Cook has tested this scenery with Just Flight’s Military Plus Packs, along with Ultimate Terrain and FSGenesis for enhanced terrain data. These optional add-ons accentuate regional depth, but this scenery expansion functions well as a standalone installation.

Tools Used

The designer employed Flight 1’s AFX tool (used for modifying airport layouts) alongside Instant Scenery (a utility for placing objects directly within the sim), ensuring that each building, apron, and piece of ground traffic is positioned in a carefully orchestrated manner.

Installation Steps

  1. Unzip AFX_KSSC_JC.bgl and KSSC_JC.bgl.
  2. Place both files into your Addon Scenery/Scenery folder.
  3. Restart FSX so the simulator can load the new data.

After reloading, you will see the new parking assignments and upgraded visuals that highlight this operational base in your simulator.
