Editorial
When it comes enjoying a little trip down memory lane, I always find it’s nice to fire up FS2004. It’s probably the simulator I used the most as a youth and this little jaunt back down to see how it feels is always a lot of fun. Reliving the old features and style of FS2004 is great fun and even to this day I still download the odd package to stick in there to jazz it up and keep it changing and improving. This includes this remake of the Lockheed C130 Hercules. This particular remake uses the South African Air Force model and gives you access to one of the most celebrated long-range transport aircraft of recent times.
With up to 90 people carried at once it can move full groups of soldiers as well as carry up to 64 fully prepared paratroops and up to 74 stretchers, with 2 medical experts in the evacuation roles needed. In short, this aircraft is used to get troops both into the battle zone as well as helping those people get to and from the battlefield when they have been injured and/or finished a mission. The Hercules is something I knew little about, only that it regularly served during the Bush War and was a key component to success in that war. Today, the aircraft is still used regularly and I enjoy loading it up and trying to use it in the more civil manner that it tends to be these days.
The whole thing, though, comes together spectacularly and makes it feel nice and easy for you to understand why this aircraft has served such a key role for so long. The aircraft features unique animations such as a the cargo ramp and the main exit opening and this does bring the whole thing together in a more positive light – in short, it all looks great.
The full lighting and the photorealistic panels that appear also look brilliant, helping solidify the entire look and the experience of the product. You will have all the help that you need in detailing and putting together the right kind of plan when flying thanks to all the detail provided to you in the cockpit; you just need to use all of these extra details included to the best of your abilities.
Add in the fact this comes with unique sound packs, and you are left with one of the most impressive packages that you’ll find when it comes to this aircraft. The C-130 is a very popular aircraft and the reasons why it’s so popular will become apparent fairly quickly once you start flying it; it just feels right!
I’m a huge fan of this model and in particular the 1978 edition of the aircraft. It looks a bit cooler than the current edition, and also gives you another layer of realism in terms of matching the colors to the real thing when it was used in the Bush War. For precision, detail and getting things right in a historical context this is the place to get started with for me!
