Editorial

I’ve not had the pleasure of using a flying boat for some time so when I seen this chance to use the old Short S.30 I decided to grab it with both hands.

This aircraft was a very impressive model when it first hit the skies/seas and thus I was always intrigued with the idea of trying one out. I have to say that after a few weeks of messing around with it and getting used to its quirks in comparison to a normal aircraft in this kind of venue, I was massively impressed with just how well this was capable of looking after itself in the skies.

Expertly Designed

This medium-range version of the aircraft will do an excellent job of giving you an idea of just how different these are from your traditional crafts. It comes with both the Tasman and BOAC liveries so you also get a nice little selection of looks to play around with – this introduces all of the lovely things that make using Flying Boats so fun! I was really impressed and for my first use of this specific model I have to say that the tam working on this have done a grand job of putting it all together.

The level of detail on the aircraft is massively impressive, too, with the liveries matching up to the performance levels that it can provide. Not only does this give you a really interesting view of the aircraft but it makes it very easy to get to grips with, ensuring that you can understand the right routes forward for your success.

Just Like Reality

The Short brand of aircraft have long been one of those groups that people respect and adhere to when it comes to finding quality aircraft that can outperform themselves, but with the help of this package you can quite quickly understand how it’s different. I had to get used to being near the sea more often than not as well as understanding that I can actually make landings in the seas one again, so it was a bit of a learning curve for me.

That being said, it was a very enjoyable flight experience and I would happily recommend this to anyone who wants to engage in a unique, interesting way to fly around cohesively. Another major factor is the fact that this aircraft had so many useful little features inside the cockpit that might be quite hard to get used to – after a few hours of crashing, just like me, you’ll grow to love this aircrafts unique little quirks, though!

Nice flyable version of the original long range Airliner. It is limited to water landings only of course, and there is a full size version in Southampton Air Museum (UK) which was the last one flying.
