This add-on provides a distinctive South African Air Force repaint for Dave Garwood’s freeware Bristol Beaufighter model in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. The included textures depict aircraft registration NV139, representing No. 15 Squadron (SAAF). Enthusiasts of classic World War II twin-engine fighters will appreciate this unique scheme, which showcases the Beaufighter’s robust design and operational versatility. The repaint leverages Dave Garwood’s paint kit and reflects the historical use of the Beaufighter as both a night-fighter and torpedo-bomber during the war.
Historical SAAF Markings and Aircraft Background
The Bristol Beaufighter originated from the Bristol Aeroplane Company as a project integrating components from the Beaufort torpedo-bomber. Powered by twin engines, the airframe became known for its reliable performance in various roles, including maritime strikes and night interception. During its service, several squadrons, including those of the South African Air Force, operated these rugged warbirds. With its notable nickname “Torbeau” when fitted for torpedo missions, this aircraft played a pivotal part in numerous late-war engagements, revealing exceptional adaptability.
Unique Livery Details
These textures apply authentic SAAF insignia and camouflage consistent with mid-World War II standards. Developers integrated precise fuselage markings and historically accurate numbering to reflect the real-world NV139. The underlying model, created by Dave Garwood, features well-defined exterior lines, an immersive virtual cockpit, and custom sound components. This texture package aims to provide a realistic representation of SAAF operational paint schemes, bringing an extra layer of immersion to those flying the Beaufighter in missions or free-flight sessions.
Installation Steps for FSX
- Extract the downloaded ZIP file to a convenient temporary location.
- Locate the folder named texture.NV139 and copy it into the Beaufighter aircraft directory, typically found at:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\Beaufighter
- Open the aircraft.cfg file in a text editor.
- Add the following code snippet after the last [fltsim.X] entry. Replace “XX” with the next sequential number to ensure proper registration within FSX:

description=Developed as a private venture by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, the Beaufighter was a two-seat all-metal fighter using components from the Beaufort torpedo-bomber. First flown on July 17 1939, the Beaufighter eventually equipped 52 RAF squadrons, giving outstanding service during World War II, in particular as a night-fighter and torpedo-bomber (where the aircraft were affectionately known as 'Torbeaus').
