Make Scenery with the Object Placement Tool in FSX

Object Placement Tool scenery building in Microsoft Flight Simulator X turns the sim into a visual editor, letting creators drop, move, rotate, and fine-tune 3D objects directly in-world with immediate feedback. An illustrated guide explains where to find the feature in the Deluxe edition and how to use it for custom scenery layouts.

Flight Simulator X Prepar3D
The Deluxe version of Flight Simulator X contains a very easy-to-use tool for placing scenery objects visually within the game. Unfortunately, the Microsoft developers neglected to tell anybody. This document contains an illustrated explanation of this tool and how to use it. My most sincere apologies - I am unable, for lack of free time, to offer support of any kind.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D scenery
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place scenery in Addon Scenery

Create a folder under FSX\Addon Scenery\ containing scenery and texture sub-folders.
  3. Activate in Scenery Library

In FSX, go to Settings → Scenery Library → Add Area. Higher priority means it overrides lower entries for the same location.
  4. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.

Thanks for this tutorial on installing the OPT and using it for scenery creation. The procedure is relatively straightforward and the OPT will load and work if you are careful. As for its use, the OPT must rank as one of the most tedious apps available with FSX - but once you've got used to its idiosyncrasies, the OPT will enable you to do almost anything with the multitude of library objects that come with FSX. And, of course, the OPT allows you to develop Missions... One last point - buy InstantScenery if you want an easier method! Good Luck.
