Microsoft Flight Simulator 2014 Leaked Artwork

Just in from a leaked source is a shock from Microsoft: the box artwork of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2014. While we can't find much information on this new simulator as of yet, we have been given early leaked box artwork.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2014 leaked box artwork

The above image shows the box artwork of what is appearing to be Microsoft Flight Simulator 2014. The box artwork shows a Boeing 747 landing at an airport with the original Microsoft Flight Simulator logo and "2014" placed above the logo. The artwork is also encased in an "Xbox Games for Windows" frame - perhaps indicating that this release will be available on Xbox as well as Windows 8.

The 747 in the image appears to have been painted in a PMDG house color scheme - from what I can see - I could be wrong. If PMDG aircraft were included in the simulator release, perhaps they will announce something themselves shortly - if they are under a Non-Disclosure agreement with Microsoft; perhaps not.

The artwork also reveals it's going to be released under "Windows 8", however, we can't confirm or deny that it will also run under Windows 7 and lower.

We have no other information as of yet regarding this release and no official announcement from Microsoft themselves.

What can we expect?

Hopefully, we can expect some great things from this simulator release. With the date of "2014" on the box artwork, we can hopefully expect it to be released this year. Usually, they release the series a year earlier than the year in the product title - however it doesn't seem to be the case with this version. We can also expect this version to be a fully digital downloadable product with no CDs or DVDs being issued or manufactured. Hopefully, all of your FSX addons will also work with this version.

...wait, what's the date today? Let's hear your comments below!

True News - Microsoft Flight Simulator (released in 2020)

Update November 2020

While I'm sure you all enjoyed our April Fools joke of 2014 above, jokes aside, Microsoft has officially announced a new flight sim. It's not a joke anymore!

Huge, ominous clouds over NYC in the sim.

Microsoft took back the "Flight Simulator" franchise from franchisee Dovetail Games and decided there was indeed a market for producing a PC based flight simulator with longevity. Thank you, Microsoft!

The new sim looks fantastic - in fact, stunning. You can watch the official trailer video below;

The new sim really is next-generation and supports all of the latest graphics and core hardware. The graphics and scenery are truly amazing. The entire world is generated on photorealistic satellite data (thanks to Bing).

We, at Fly Away Simulation, have of course covered this release in full detail with our ultimate guide here. Since we published that piece, we have also published a fully detailed review of the new flight simulator here.

We created an unofficial trailer/showcase type video demonstrating the new features and graphics in this brand-new sim. We'd love you to watch our video;

If you use and frequent Fly Away Simulation, chances are you do mainly for the freeware add-ons available. We have recently added brand-new categories to our add-ons library to cover the brand new Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) release. You can view all of the freeware FS2020 add-ons here. FS2020 is not an official shortening - we prefer to use MSFS (Microsoft Flight Simulator) as this new release is essentially "evergreen" with updates being released for many years using the same title/name.

Let us know your thoughts!

Did we catch you out on April Fools!? Have you purchased your copy of the brand new "evergreen" sim that was released? Let us know in the comments section below.

Download iconDon't forget... We have a huge selection (over 24,000 files) of free mods and add-ons for MSFS, FSX, P3D & X-Plane in the file library. Files include aircraft, scenery, and utilities All are free-to-download and use - you don't even need to register. Browse on down to the file library here.

Huh. Seems kind of unlikely, them having just failed at Microsoft Flight. But maybe? I'd love to see this be real.

Chris PalmerMon, 31 Mar 2014 23:37:33 GMT

April Fools! Nice one. I don't think it would ever happen.

SpikeMon, 31 Mar 2014 23:52:11 GMT

There is no way this is real. After their last failure and Prepar3d taking over, I don't believe Microsoft will ever release a flight simulator again. (It's funny all the comments are negative but hey, look at their last attempt)

Anthony SaponaroTue, 01 Apr 2014 00:24:18 GMT

This would be awesome !! But it is probably a joke . Damn it !! I was so hopeful you have no idea until someone mentioned April fools !

Doug KearneyTue, 01 Apr 2014 00:28:36 GMT

Looks like you're a day early for April Fool's Day, but I guess it already is somewhere in the Eastern world.

manuelTue, 01 Apr 2014 01:46:30 GMT

When do you expect this flight simulator 2014 will be released

James LeenonTue, 01 Apr 2014 02:06:24 GMT

Well first off from the box cover, looks like Fly Tampa's Kai Tak (which I have nonetheless an incredible add on). Also I have so much invested in FSX, All Orbx FTX products, Megascenery Earth Items, aircraft, ect. Besides no more room on HD as I also have an RC simulator (Real Flight) and Aerofly FS. Oh yeah Flight as well which I do enjoy aerocache hunting and such. Blue side up guys:-)

William RayTue, 01 Apr 2014 02:09:30 GMT

I think is just a tease from Microsoft, But if it is going to happen they should make an xbox1 console version, since most of the people are now slowly gearing away from the computer era to console gaming. xbox 360, ps 3/4 etc. Again seeing is believing!!!!

JoeTue, 01 Apr 2014 02:45:38 GMT

Xbox Games on Windows. LOL Nice try.

moeTue, 01 Apr 2014 03:34:53 GMT

IS THIS FOR REAL??? its not good if somebody did make this artwork in there home!!! we need to hear from Microsoft!

RylinTue, 01 Apr 2014 03:46:23 GMT

It's fake. As an artist, some of the dimensions don't match for some of the logos at the bottom. The actual shot of the terrain and passenger jet would hardly draw much attention. It's a hazy shot of the terrain which looks dated to begin with. "Xbox Games for Windows" is just banner image material and not official box art. Google it. ;) Secondly, look at the "PEGI" and "Windows 8" logos. They are always matched correctly with the same height. Notice the amateur placement. I wish this was true, but its a decent April Fool's attempt!

Luis A. Custodio.Tue, 01 Apr 2014 04:05:24 GMT

I think no one would work on a chart like the logo that appears in the ad, to play April Fools Day. I think that leaving this graphic filter what you want is to make a poll.

SHowlTue, 01 Apr 2014 04:26:36 GMT

Posted on Midnight on April Fools. Nice...

TinytacoheadTue, 01 Apr 2014 04:37:10 GMT

As already stated, this's no doubt an April Fool's gag.. but even if it were real, the fact that it says "XBox Games on Winblows" is enough of a deterrent for me.

~Tiny

Don DesfosseTue, 01 Apr 2014 04:37:24 GMT

Very good April Fool's Day joke. You let the cat out of the bag though with the "What's the date today?" And for the person who thought it was early, take a peek at the release date/time in Zulu.... ;) Although since I now see comments were made before 000Z, maybe there was just a tad bit of eagerness in the release.... I also liked the early leaked box artwork for the downloadable-only product. Download their software and maybe they'll mail you a box for... uh... something.... ;) Nice one, guys!

shakuTue, 01 Apr 2014 05:32:44 GMT

April Fools, and who cares. I have Prepar3d!

NateTue, 01 Apr 2014 05:49:17 GMT

Not to dash anyone's dreams, but it is a fake (sadly). If you notice the 2014 font is different from the "Microsoft Flight Simulator" font, and if you look at previous box arts for this game the year uses the same font as the Flight Simulator text. Also, the PEGI badge, Windows 8 badge, and Microsoft Game Studios are misaligned along the bottom. The 747 graphic is too poor of a quality, and there probably wouldn't be a PMDG plane included with the game. It would be nice if they made a new, refreshed FS, but it probably will never see the light of day.

Mark FletcherTue, 01 Apr 2014 06:16:58 GMT

The date says it all! :(

I wish it was true though.

JimTue, 01 Apr 2014 06:17:15 GMT

I'm betting it's all about April Fools Day

LouisTue, 01 Apr 2014 07:37:27 GMT

What a pity it is April 1!

PeterTue, 01 Apr 2014 07:40:25 GMT

That picture came from a site I fly on

Joram HoltzTue, 01 Apr 2014 07:45:19 GMT

Bear in mind, that over here, in Switzerland, it is already April 1st. So an April-Fool-joke is certainly a possibility.

However, I wish Microsoft will take this suggestive joke seriousely, since they would benefit strongly from releasing a new Flight Simulator.

If you aske me, MS FLIGHT is the real joke. An expensive one too.

Wishing you an uneventful April 1st and clear skies,

Sincerely,

Joram Holtz

N9ZN-ExtraTue, 01 Apr 2014 07:46:44 GMT

Maybe there is some merit to this and MAYBE THERE IS NOT.

Given MS closed down the Flight Simulator (stand alone product) after the release of MSFS10 this move just does not make any since. But as an after thought, when has MS made a lot of since when it comes to software, especially Operating Systems?

Hopefully this will happen and is not some kind of misguided hoax. Anything to put some competition back into the Flight Sim community would be surely appreciated. Including if it is nothing more than MSFS10 with selected PMDG planes. YOU HAVE TO ADMIT A SIM OF THAT TYPE WOULD BE A SKY SHATTERING EVENT, FULLY FUNCTIONAL PMDG PLANES ( A GROUP OF THEM) AT A SPECIAL PRICE FROM MicroSoft. You know, as a thank you to all the dedicated flight simmers out there.

HINT! HINT! HINT! HINT! HINT! A R E Y O U L I S T E N I N G ? ? ?

JonathanTue, 01 Apr 2014 08:01:01 GMT

April Fools! And.... if they were ever to do this, would there ever be a way to make it soooooo good that I would simply "give up" my monstrous investment in tons of extras for the old FS? That would be a feat.......

dave humphreysTue, 01 Apr 2014 08:27:26 GMT

Well it is April 1st ??????

JJTue, 01 Apr 2014 08:50:40 GMT

APRIL FOOL'S !!! Nice, I have to admit, I first, fell for it and started to speculate about it but I then realized it's too good to be true. Well executed joke.

Jay LinkTue, 01 Apr 2014 09:04:05 GMT

Is the airport Kai Tak?? I was wondering why they chose that one until I saw the comments about April Fools' Day.

Flydave123Tue, 01 Apr 2014 09:23:01 GMT

This is real as there is more detailed news about it here.

http://www.simstop.com/2014/03/31/new-flight-simulator-announced/

Gyo KamataTue, 01 Apr 2014 09:35:29 GMT

I hope so, I currently use FSX and I'm quite satisfied by it and love to see what they will do next....if it's true ;)

JoshTue, 01 Apr 2014 09:41:30 GMT

Maaaannn this is foul! You're messing with people's emotions posting this!

Mike GreenawayTue, 01 Apr 2014 11:02:18 GMT

I can't see it happening myself If it does it will probably full of Bugs as usual

Doug Linn/RTMMTue, 01 Apr 2014 11:30:16 GMT

Probably an April Fools joke, but if it is not, it should be. Microsoft abandoned our community years ago and have given no support or updates for FSX, also measured in years. At RTMM, we are gearing up for Lockheed Martin's Prepar3D. We are converting all of the major libraries to be compatible (our POP project). We intend to abandon FSX just as they abandoned us.

claudioTue, 01 Apr 2014 12:54:07 GMT

nope. the 2014 font doesn't even match, even the overall design is pretty much unbalanced and below average, nice try

NicoTue, 01 Apr 2014 12:58:03 GMT

APRIL FOOL!!!!

According sales agreement of the Microsoft ESP code (core coding of FS) with Lockheed Martin, Microsoft may never again bring out a Flight Simulator program such as Microsoft Flight Simulator or even use the name "Flight Simulator" in the title. Nice joke but so not true!

DmytriTue, 01 Apr 2014 13:02:58 GMT

If this is true I'm extremely excited about it. However, it is the infamous april fools day so I'm not holding my breath until more information is divulged to the public. A more important question is, will this actually be a simulator like MS FSX or will it be a game like MS Flight?

Jørgen OktoberTue, 01 Apr 2014 13:53:08 GMT

Not funny =/ On any other day this would get me spinning, but the box art would make me hugely skeptical.

arnabTue, 01 Apr 2014 14:42:15 GMT

An April fools joke at 5:30 in the morning was not how I planned to start the day. Well played.

TerianderTue, 01 Apr 2014 15:05:48 GMT

Game engines are supposed to go forward, not backwards. No way Microsoft is going to use such out-dated fog effect, out-dated building textures, and non-reflective water to advertise their 2014 flight sim game engine.

If you're going to try to fool us, at least have a DX11 or the new DX12 feature. Other-wise, fake as hell.

MajorCowboyTue, 01 Apr 2014 15:19:38 GMT

I will believe it when i see it, but i think its a 1 April joke.

Captain737Tue, 01 Apr 2014 17:02:37 GMT

Meh. Funny, but not funny ha-ha. Thank god for X-Plane and P3D v2.

FlightloverTue, 01 Apr 2014 18:07:19 GMT

This is true.... read read read!!!!! READ THIS :http://www.simstop.com/2014/03/31/new-flight-simulator-announced/

RELEASE DATE :expected April 2016.

PabloTue, 01 Apr 2014 23:17:23 GMT

Funny this? Don't think so. For a moment I thought we had MSFS back

DanWed, 02 Apr 2014 00:05:12 GMT

I just bought it! Found it at BestAprilFoolsJoke.com. It's killer! Flying to Mars right now!

GregWed, 02 Apr 2014 00:44:04 GMT

Amazing how something like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2014 is announced on April 1st, and it's a joke, while Goat Simulator was released today, and it is an ACTUAL game. (Go ahead, look it up. I'm not kidding).

JustinWed, 02 Apr 2014 12:53:08 GMT

It would be nice to have an updated version of MS because look how long it has been since FSX. I still have my original receipt from Best Buy.

SalThu, 03 Apr 2014 22:57:41 GMT

Yeah, this is likely not real....for one, that "2014" isn't convincing enough in itself...look at how it stands out from the rest of the title. Second, why use a photo of a 747 landing somewhere random? Not the breathtaking photo that many of the covers have been in previous releases. I'd say it's an April Fools gag. MSFS is likely done with Prepar3D taking over he FS yoke.

Leon RoyerSat, 05 Apr 2014 14:00:03 GMT

I enjoyed reading with hope that a 2014 version was coming to life!

About a month ago ...I sent Bill Gates an idea re Flight Sim Gold to trans form it to 3D and I will buy the glasses to fly.

I also sent in the idea of utilizing Google Earth Technology for their senery on the Gold format.

I was sent a letter from their Development Staff that said they cannot accept "customer" ideas unless it fits their core business. I have always practiced listening to my customers and improve products accordingly to grow the business!

I know they probably have many ideas sent to them by "aviators"......so we'll just have wait and see what customer ideas they listened to in the "2014" issue.

PS....I was not looking for any payback on these ideas....just trying to help us achieve excellence!

greenberg1940Sun, 06 Apr 2014 01:42:32 GMT

Nice try........ Oh well, guess I'll have to purchase that Lockheed thing or, uh , the other 10 sim.......

Have a good flight, Cappy, and remember, wheels down for landing!!!!!!!!!!!!

PH-JVXSun, 06 Apr 2014 12:10:57 GMT

The only way forwarde for real Flightsimmers is P3D, you don't fly seriously on an Xbox. FS for MS it's a game, for Flightsimmers it isn't. AND this realy looks like a nice April fool joke. But then, hey- isn't MS itself a joke these days?

FlightloverSun, 06 Apr 2014 12:39:42 GMT

Its true guys ,have you read the info ? -it says following: New flight Simulator announced!..

After years of waiting and the flight sim community having given up hope of a replacement for FSX being released, it has just been announced that a team has been put together to work on a new version of Flight Simulator!

The brief for the team is to make the first ‘APR’ (Assimulated Pilot Reality) Flight Simulator truly immersive using the latest technology like the virtual reality headset by Oculus Rift and Sony’s Playstation 4 headset combined with ‘glove tracking’ hardware for tracking hand, arm and finger movement. The user will be able to look around the cockpit as if they were really there, flick switches, move throttles and control the aircraft TOTALLY in the virtual world around them.

The scenery view out of the window will be real-world too as a deal has been agreed with Google to use the real world images from their street view technology and google earth images, which when combined with NASA satellite terrain data, presents a totally plausible 3D world. Every building textured to match its real world appearance and height to within 0.2 metre accuracy. This incredible technology has been developed for the US military but a ‘lower resolution’ 2.0 metre version has been approved for commercial use.

Those of you with low end PCs will still need to upgrade, but not as badly as the shift from FS9 to FSX. By combining two or more computers to spread the load and using all cores of modern multi-core machines plus the power of modern day graphics cards, the sim is expected to achieve frame rates in the twenties even on one moderate spec computer, and in the hundreds using multiple computers networked together!

Release date expected April 2016.

BlackbirdMon, 07 Apr 2014 13:29:21 GMT

I fly FS2004 on XP and FSX on Vista. If this FS2014 for real then I hope the Windows 8 portion is for real, also. I have been waiting for a GOOD Windows 8 compatible simulator.

Bernard MorrisMon, 07 Apr 2014 18:14:23 GMT

Well, I thought I saw that Microsoft Game Studios disbanded.

JetrangerTue, 08 Apr 2014 05:53:40 GMT

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2014 WOW I just picked up my copy of it for X-BOX and it totally blows FSX away, very realistic Ground and Airport Textures.

over 500,000 AI Aircraft on the ground and skies alone. Actual passengers boarding the aircraft and Pilots pre-checking their aircraft and mechanics and ground personnel too, its like being in a Movie. With this version you get all the Aircraft all kinds of Aircraft painted just like the real ones in HI Def quality too !

707's 727's 747's 767's 787's Concorde, All the Airbuses, McDonnell Douglas DC8's Lockheed L-1011's, British Comets, Vickers VC-10's the Lockheed L-1049's Constellations and all kinds of Cessna prop aircraft and Cessna Jets and Beechcraft twin turbo props, DC3' DC4 - DC6 - DC7 , XB BELL X1 Super Sonic aircraft and tons more too.

Also all airports have control towers you can actually sit in and control aircraft with working Radar screens and airport traffic movement on the tarmacs !

Even Air-shows are included and going on and realistic Parachutes too .

Also included are Realistic A.I. Air crashes with realistic FIRE Equipment Trucks that actually spray Foam and water on the aircraft !!!

It also has more realistic ground traffic on the roadways and hi-ways with more realistic Shipping traffic on the waterways, like the Exxon Valdez tanker spilling its oil, and that Costa Concordia passenger ship turning over on its side over by Italy.

All runways are accurately well marked and lighted !!

It even comes with the Jetliner from AIRPORT 1970 and pilots can experience flying with a hole in the cockpit, just like in the Movie !

Even the Stewardess are realistic , and simmers can choose rather to have Vintage Retro 1960's &70's type Stewardess, or, the More Dumbed Down Corporate type of Fast food type of stewardess .

Its really great Super Flight for Simming the Virtual Skies !

It'll even let you pick the kinds of Wheels for your Aircraft, like 66" Dubs or Chrome or polished Mag Wheels, with or without Spokes, and tires to too, I chose a set of Mickey Thompson Drag Racing Tires for my DC-8 Jetliner !

Also has realistic Washer Fluid to clean your windows, you can choose either blue fluid or the Red Fluid to remove the realistic Bug Splatter off the cockpit windows and bird DoDo !

You can even blow a Tire on the runway and leave scrap pieces all over the runway, just like the real Pilots do !

Download your version of Flight Simulator 2014 ASAP, its Great !!

FlightloverTue, 08 Apr 2014 17:19:50 GMT

I HAVE A REGULAR LAPTOP. AND HAVE NO NEED FOR X-BOX. I RUN REAL JOYSIK. SINCE I HAVE RELATIVES THAT FLIES AND THEN AVIATION COMPANY WHERE I HAVE MANAGERS. ONE OF THOSE UNITS JURGEN WEBER FROM LUFTHANSA. THEN THE MILITARY FLIGHT STRAIGHT THROUGH. SO I NEED OF MICRO SOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR 2014 ON REGULAR LAPTOP. X-BOX IS TO SMALL CHILDREN DADA DADA DADA X-BOX ....

Harold B. TurleyTue, 22 Apr 2014 21:22:37 GMT

Being that it is depicting "XBOX" but yet claiming Windows 8 compatible? Why would that matter? I've never heard of anyone playing XBOX games on their Windows PC, or Windows games on their XBOX. I think it is a hoax. Also there is no listing with www.pegi.info for this.

FlightloverWed, 23 Apr 2014 12:05:36 GMT

Harold B. Turley ,.... wait at least until we are well within 2015 before you start screaming ...everything is still possible..2016 is 2 yeaaars from now! Alooot can happend in 2 years....just saying.

Vaughn BearhawkTue, 06 May 2014 00:40:12 GMT

What if Microsoft Flight was just a teaser for what is coming in the future...

Darren LeslieWed, 04 Jun 2014 00:13:27 GMT

Have faith friends. Think how much gaming has changed even over the last 10 years. Before long we will be wearing a headset and goggles to put us in the cockpit

Yes this one is better that FSX I should get it.

Wayne DibertMon, 10 Jun 2019 13:12:12 GMT

I am inspired by this announcement. Microsoft is a multi-billion dollar company and I think now they see a niche that they can serve. Having proprietary license for their platform I believe now they can see a revenue stream for their business.
