This specialist freeware update refines key aspects of Adelaide International Airport (YPAD) in South Australia for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It was meticulously crafted by Ray Smith using ADE (Airport Design Editor) to enhance runways, taxiways, and parking allocations, while also introducing additional support vehicle roads, a helipad, and other essential improvements. Users will notice more accurate airport operations, an updated Dom/Int layout, and optional crosswind runway capability for diverse takeoff and landing patterns.

Key Modifications and Enhancements

Crosswind Configuration: The add-on includes an optional file enabling the secondary runway for practical crosswind operations (aircraft can land and depart on a runway not parallel to the main one). This approach increases capacity and realism.

Parking for Large Aircraft: Additional parking positions now support bigger aircraft types, including a designated A380 gate, ensuring ample space for widebodies.

Terminal Removal (Where Applicable): Some outdated structures, such as the old domestic terminal, were demolished to align with current airport configurations.

Upgraded Ground Layout: The developer relocated and adjusted multiple taxiway alignments and signage to resemble real-world specifications. Furthermore, new vehicle paths and extensive fuel truck coverage have been implemented.

Control Tower Perspectives: By positioning the camera on top of the tower (in tower view), you gain a detailed vantage point of the surroundings.

Included BGL Files

YPAD_ADE_RS.BGL
Incorporates the standard runway operation. It follows the primary usage pattern for arriving and departing flights.
YPAD_ADE_CW_RS.BGL
Enables the crosswind runway, making it fully operational for simultaneous use with the primary strip. Parking assignments remain consistent with the other file.
YPAD_ADE_OBJ.BGL
Contains object data, such as additional scenery elements and structures placed around the airport.

Installation Guidelines

  1. Remove or overwrite any earlier AFCAD versions from Ray Smith, or back them up to a location outside your main simulator folder.
  2. Choose either the YPAD_ADE_RS.BGL or the YPAD_ADE_CW_RS.BGL file (not both). Copy the chosen file into your “Addon Scenery/scenery” folder within the Flight Simulator X installation directory.
  3. Place YPAD_ADE_OBJ.BGL into your “Scenery/Global/scenery” folder. This ensures new objects appear within the airport environment.
  4. Launch Microsoft Flight Simulator X, and the updated airport setup will be active.
  • Note: Only one YPAD AFCAD runway file may be active at a time. Avoid using multiple BGL files simultaneously, as it can cause incorrect parking codes and various conflicts.
  • If an AI traffic add-on installs its own YPAD AFCAD, it could interfere with these files—ensure no duplicate data are in place.
  • Activating the crosswind layout often introduces so-called “fake runways” in ATIS communications. This is part of the method used to enable non-parallel runway activity. If unwanted, revert to the default file.

Uninstallation Procedure

  1. Remove the installed BGL files from the corresponding folders, and the simulator will revert to its default airport data.

Additional Viewing Tips

To explore the scenery from the tower more freely, adjust your “View track/pan Toggle” setting in the simulator’s controls. Assign a convenient key or joystick button to unlock and rotate your viewpoint in a 360-degree arc around the airfield. Activating the key once more returns your camera to the default aircraft position.
