This updated AFCAD layout for Toronto Pearson International Airport (CYYZ) in Ontario, Canada, brings an improved ground layout, optional crosswind runway usage, and enhanced parking allocations for Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Created by Ray Smith, it incorporates the new International Pier F at Terminal 1, removes defunct structures, and refines taxiway routes, ensuring a more authentic experience at Canada’s busiest airport.
In-Depth Airport Adjustments
Toronto Pearson (often referred to simply as “Pearson”) is a major hub within the Greater Toronto Area. With this modification, the now-demolished Terminal 2 and connected car park are removed, while gates and parking positions reflect current operations. Additional fuel trucks and upgraded signage further align with real-world layout changes, and custom routes have been constructed for support vehicles to reduce any conflict with taxiing traffic.
Multiple BGL Files and Crosswind Options
This release includes four BGL files:
- CYYZ_ADE_CW_RS.BGL – Enables crosswind runways for simultaneous usage of up to five runways.
- CYYZ_ADE_RS.BGL – Maintains default runway assignments without crosswind activation.
- CYYZ_ADE_CVX.bgl – Contains terrain exclusions and other airport polygon data.
- CYYZ_ADE_OBJ.BGL – Provides extra scenery objects, including custom placements for jetways.
Pick one runway operation BGL that suits your preferred traffic flow. Both runway configurations rely on the same updated parking allocations.
Optional Crosswind Advantages
By activating crosswind runways, you allow more simultaneous arrivals and departures, reflecting Pearson’s real-world traffic distribution strategies. However, be aware that enabling crosswind functionality may cause ATIS to list fictional or “fake” runways, a known side effect of providing true parallel operations.
Installing the Enhanced Files
- Decide which runway operation file suits your style (either CYYZ_ADE_CW_RS.BGL or CYYZ_ADE_RS.BGL) and place it alongside CYYZ_ADE_CVX.bgl into your
Flight Simulator X/Addon Scenery/scenery
folder. - Move CYYZ_ADE_OBJ.BGL into your
Flight Simulator X/Scenery/Global/scenery
folder.
Managing Jetway Textures
To see the custom jetway extensions, pull the relevant texture files into your Scenery/Global/Texture
folder:
- Open
FSX/Scenery/NAME/Texture
and locate the files jfk_jetway.dds (day texture) and jfk_jetway_LM.dds (night texture). - Copy both textures, then paste them into
Flight Simulator X/Scenery/Global/Texture
. - Upon restarting Microsoft Flight Simulator X, the new jetways should become visible.
- If you have already moved these textures in the past for another airport upgrade by Ray Smith, you can skip this step.
Avoiding Potential Conflicts
- Never keep more than one CYYZ_RS.BGL (the crosswind or the default-operation file) in your
Addon Scenery/scenery
folder at the same time. - Ensure no other AFCAD files for CYYZ are installed by any AI traffic add-on, as multiple active layouts of the same airport will create issues with parking and runway assignments.
- Be mindful that ATIS calls out additional runway entries when the crosswind file is active. If this is undesirable, use the standard operation version instead.
Removing the Enhancement
To revert to the default Pearson airport, simply remove all the corresponding BGL files for this add-on. Once eliminated, the simulator will load the stock scenery for CYYZ.
Tower-View Techniques
For a practical tower viewpoint, bind a unique keyboard or controller button to the “View track/pan toggle.” After switching on the tower view, engage this toggle to freely pan around the airport with your hat switch or thumbstick. Pressing the same control again will return you to the user-aircraft perspective, offering a convenient way to monitor Pearson’s busy layout from above.
Enjoy these improvements to Toronto Pearson International Airport, and have a smooth flying experience with this freeware release from developer Ray Smith.
