This freeware modification enhances Washington Dulles International Airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator X by refining its layout, adding crosswind runway functionality, and adjusting parking allocations. Developed by Ray Smith, it offers an upgraded version of the airport located in Chantilly, Virginia—often associated with Washington, DC. Below, you will find detailed instructions on installing and using these upgraded scenery files in your simulation environment.

Improved Facility Layout and Key Modifications

Washington Dulles International Airport, historically opened in the early 1960s and named for John Foster Dulles, is a vital hub for long-haul and regional flights. This enhanced add-on helps reflect the airport’s real-world complexity by modifying default objects, optimizing parking gates (including dedicated A380 spots), and providing well-defined service roads across the apron. Additionally, fuel trucks have been increased, and the control tower view has been refined, creating a more immersive atmosphere when in tower mode.

Scenery Files and Their Functions

Four BGL components are included, each addressing distinct aspects of the airport upgrade:

  • KIAD_ADE_RS.BGL: Adjusts the airport while preserving the original single-runway operational setup.
  • KIAD_ADE_CW_RS.BGL: Includes full crosswind runway activation, allowing all four runways to handle arrivals and departures simultaneously.
  • KIAD_ADE_CVX.BGL: Defines crucial terrain and elevation corrections around the airport.
  • KIAD_ADE_OBJ.BGL: Introduces additional objects and enhancements (e.g., updated signage and static details).

Runway Configuration Choices

Use only one of the following runway BGL variants:

KIAD_ADE_CW_RS.BGL
Crosswind runways enabled. You will notice all four operational directions, though ATIS audio calls fake runways alongside actual ones. This is essential for parallel runway activation.
KIAD_ADE_RS.BGL
Retains default runway usage without crosswind functionality.

Both variations share the same assigned parking positions.

Installation Steps

  1. Choose one runway file (either KIAD_ADE_CW_RS.BGL or KIAD_ADE_RS.BGL) plus KIAD_ADE_CVX.BGL, and place them into the “Addon Scenery/scenery” directory of Microsoft Flight Simulator X.
  2. Move KIAD_ADE_OBJ.BGL into “Scenery/Global/scenery.”
  3. Launch the simulator, and these refinements will become active.

Note: Maintain only one active KIAD_RS.BGL variant inside the Addon Scenery/scenery folder to prevent erroneous parking or overlapping structures.

If you already have prior KIAD modifications from Ray Smith or any AI traffic add-on using another AFCAD for KIAD, remove or relocate those conflicting files first.

Removing the Modification

  1. Delete the four provided BGL files to restore the default KIAD layout.

Enjoy the enhanced Washington Dulles environment, and thank you to Ray Smith for creating this refined layout.
