Experience an updated layout for Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport (LFBD), situated in southwest France, through this AFCAD file set designed by Ray Smith. Created with the latest Airport Design Editor (ADE), it streamlines taxiways, introduces accurate parking allocations, and incorporates the Billi Terminal. It also provides comprehensive runway configuration options, ensuring users of Microsoft Flight Simulator X can enhance their airport operations with ease.
Key Airport Modifications
Comprehensive Billi Terminal Integration: This file set includes the airport’s “Billi” facility. The term “Billi Terminal” refers to a dedicated structure intended for efficient passenger handling. Parking positions and assigned gates have been adjusted around this low-cost-focused area.
Dual-Runway Capabilities (Crosswind Support): One of the included files introduces a crosswind runway setup. Crosswind refers to covering separate runway headings so that both runways remain fully in service for simultaneous arrivals and departures. This option allows more realistic traffic distribution.
Revised Taxi Paths and Support Routes: All taxiways and signage have been enhanced, reflecting the latest ground layout. Ground service vehicle pathways have also been rebuilt, minimizing traffic congestion and improving ramp efficiency.
Tower View Enhancement: Virtual tower perspectives are aligned to the airport’s control tower rooftop, giving a fresh vantage when selecting Tower View mode.
Included BGL Components
- LFBD_ADE_RS.BGL
- Implements default runway usage with updated parking and taxiways.
- LFBD_ADE_CW_RS.BGL
- Adds full crosswind runway activation. Both runways operate simultaneously for takeoff and landing.
- LFBD_ADE_CVX.bgl
- Handles airport terrain adjustments and certain added elements for scenery accuracy.
- LFBD_ADE_OBJ.BGL
- Contains additional object placements such as extended jetways or other custom scenery items.
Runway Operation Configuration
- LFBD_ADE_CW_RS.BGL – Crosswind runways activated for dual use.
- LFBD_ADE_RS.BGL – Maintains the primary runway as the principal departure and arrival point.
Both options share parking assignments and identical stands.
Installation Steps
- Remove or overwrite any previous AFCAD files for LFBD by Ray Smith if they exist. If you wish to retain older files, store them outside of Microsoft Flight Simulator X’s active directories.
- Choose one runway operation file: either LFBD_ADE_RS.BGL or LFBD_ADE_CW_RS.BGL.
- Place the chosen file and LFBD_ADE_CVX.BGL into: Flight Simulator X/Addon Scenery/scenery.
- Transfer LFBD_ADE_OBJ.BGL into: Flight Simulator X/Scenery/Global/scenery.
- To view the extended jetways, copy the “jfk_jetway.dds” and “jfk_jetway_LM.dds” files from the FSX/Scenery/NAME/Texture folder to the Scenery/Global/Texture folder. Skip this if you have already performed a similar process for any other airport by Ray Smith.
Important Note on Runway Files
- Only one LFBD runway file should remain active in the Addon Scenery/scenery directory. Having more than one can trigger conflicts.
- If you utilize AI traffic add-ons, check for duplicate AFCAD entries for LFBD to prevent anomalies.
- In the crosswind version (LFBD_ADE_CW_RS.BGL), ATIS may announce additional (non-parallel) runways, which is a known method of enabling crosswind usage. For a single-runway frequency announcement, revert to LFBD_ADE_RS.BGL.
Removal Procedure
- Deleting the BGL files from their directories will restore the default Microsoft Flight Simulator X scenery for LFBD.
Enjoy the enhanced Bordeaux–Mérignac experience and discover all it has to offer. Many thanks to Ray Smith for developing this AFCAD update.
