This well-rounded freeware package showcases a classic twin-engine airliner bearing WestJet's distinctive Canadian livery. It includes a complete Boeing 737-200 base model, multiple LOD (level of detail) variations, and carefully tuned flight dynamics for effective traffic integration in FS2004. Developed by AI Aardvark and repainted by Shane Strong, it is intended to serve as an accurate AI asset while also providing a faithful representation of the timeless aircraft on the ground and in the air.
Notable Configuration and Visual Elements
The model offers five different LOD structures to optimize in-sim performance. These layers automatically adjust the visual complexity based on the distance from the viewpoint. Such an approach keeps rendering loads low while retaining high-quality visuals up close. The airframe demonstrates working flaps, thrust reversers, gear mechanisms, and spoilers. Additionally, it includes gear bay simulations along with antenna details. Specular highlights are present, although reflective textures are optional.
Placement in the Simulator
To integrate the package, simply transfer the AIA_737_200_ALASKA
folder into your sim’s “Aircraft” directory. Once included, it can be assigned to specific route sets or virtual flight schedules. If you need further guidance on connecting an aircraft to flightplans, consult the official documentation from the developer.
Optional Reflective Variant
By default, this package is configured with non-reflective textures. However, you may switch to a reflective version by editing the aircraft.cfg
file and changing model=no_refl
to model=reflective
. Keep in mind that the included texture files do not provide reflective channels, so the external appearance will remain the same despite this change.
Performance and LOD Strategy
This 737-200 design leverages a multi-LOD approach to ensure frames remain steady, even when numerous AI aircraft occupy busy airports. The efficiency arises from automatically migrating to simpler geometric forms as the aircraft moves farther from view. This methodology, typically lacking in some high-polygon GMAX models, preserves performance without sacrificing realism at closer distances.
AI Flight Dynamics and Traffic Flow
AI Aardvark’s custom flight dynamics are a deliberate balance between refined takeoff behavior and smooth landings—both of which impact traffic coordination in a crowded sky. These parameters enable tight touchdown zones and prompt runway clearing, which is useful for optimal sequencing. For simmers who prefer more flight deck-style “float,” adjusting cruise lift, parasite drag, or induced drag values in the aircraft.cfg
can help achieve the desired flair during final approach.
AI Aardvark created the base model, while Shane Strong is responsible for the quintessential WestJet repaint. The end result faithfully captures the iconic 737 shape and WestJet’s modern branding without overtaxing computational resources. Its heritage as a second-generation airliner, seamlessly woven into a Canadian low-cost carrier’s fleet, stands out through carefully detailed textures and proportional geometry suitable for high-volume airport environments.
